Congresswoman Corrine Brown was a recipient of the 2012 Phoenix Award, an award given out each year by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) during their Annual Legislative Conference. The award, which ‘symbolizes the immortality of the human spirit and an eternal desire to reach its full potential,’ is given to four distinguished individuals. This year, Congresswoman Brown, along with the Honorable Harvey Gantt, Charlotte, North Carolina’s first African American Mayor, each received The Harold Washington Award, which is presented to an individual who has contributed immeasurably to African-American political awareness, empowerment and the advancement of minorities in the electoral process. Congresswoman Brown has been a fearless leader within the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) on the integral issue of voting rights for more than a decade. The other two award recipients of the 42nd annual legislative conference, both of whom received “The CBCF Chair’s Award,” were United States Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., and Director George Lucas.
