Congressman Pete King

Rep. King Introduces Legislation Against Child Sex Offenders

No crime can be more disgraceful or harmful than sexual abuse of children. This has to be the worst nightmare of every parent and grandparent. During my time in Congress I have worked hard to protect our children from sexual predators and worked with community organizations which are committed to fighting child sex abuse.

Parents for Megan’s Law is an outstanding Long Island advocacy organization which monitors sex offenders and alerts the public when these offenders move into their communities. A specific service which Parents for Megan’s law provides is to track down leads and tips which are called in to its offices relying on available public records. This, however, can be very time consuming. To do its job with maximum effectiveness, Parents for Megan’s Law needs to have real-time access to the Nation Crime Information Center (NCIC), an FBI administered index of criminal justice information.

Under current law, however, this information is not available to organizations such as Parents for Megan’s Law. This is why Senator Chuck Schumer and I are introducing legislation, The Sex Offender Registration Tip (SORT) Act to allow qualified organizations to obtain this data. This legislation is necessary and I assure you that Senator Schumer and I will do all we can to have it enacted into law.
