Congressman Pete King

Congressman King Supports Gen. McChrystal’s Appointment as Top Commander in Afghanistan

The war in Afghanistan has been long and treacherous. While American troops have fought bravely and achieved much success the fight is far from over. This is primarily because Pakistan has been unable or unwilling to prevent Taliban and al Qaeda from creating a sanctuary along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and launching attacks across that border.

I have visited this border area and seen first hand what our troops have achieved and what they are up against. This is why I support President Obama’s decision to increase the number of American troops and to install Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the new Commander of our troops.

Gen. McChrystal is a Special Operations veteran who had an outstanding record in Iraq which is where I first met him. Afghanistan is an unconventional war and Gen. McChrystal has proven himself to be a respected commander of unconventional forces.

The path to success in Afghanistan will not be easy. But I am confident that under Gen. McChrystal’s leadership and the overall command of Gen. David Petraeus, our brave and dedicated American troops will prevail. I also assure you that despite our policy differences on other issues, I will continue to support President Obama’s efforts in Afghanistan.
