King, Dent, Bilirakis Demand Answers from DHS Secretary Napolitano on TSA Security Breach

Request “immediate assurance” that the traveling public is protected

December 9 , 2009

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, along with Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection, and Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Management, Investigations and Oversight, sent a letter (see here) to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, demanding answers on the recent posting of a Transportation Security Administration security manual on the web.

“This is an absolutely unacceptable breach of security, to have screening procedures posted on the web for anyone to see,” said King.  “The impact of this breach could go far beyond aviation security; the American people need to hear from Secretary Napolitano that such a lapse in security will not happen again, and what measures are being put in place to ensure that the traveling public is protected.”

In the letter, Members informed Secretary Napolitano that they are requesting the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General “to immediately review the circumstances surrounding the release of this very sensitive document, and conduct an assessment of the damage done to our homeland security.”
