Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) released the following statement in opposition to the FY 2011 continuing resolution being considered in the House of Representatives.

I support reducing the deficit. But the reductions in this CR are too narrowly focused on a small sliver of the budget. The Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services, which make up around 5 percent of the total budget, account for nearly 50 percent of reductions. The continuing resolution also makes drastic cuts to transportation projects necessary for our nation to stay competitive. Defense spending, which makes up 20 percent of all spending, will actually see a $5 billion increase.

One of the first things I learned as an elected official many years ago is that compromise is necessary to governance. But this measure does not reflect compromise that’s fair to America’s middle class.
