Washington, DC –  Representatives Lofgren and Honda (D-San Jose) announced today that Santa Clara County Department of Public Health would receive over $2.6 million in HIV relief funding.  The grants are designed to provide HIV/AIDS health care and support to those who have little to no health insurance.

“In Santa Clara County we currently have about 2,300 people living with HIV/AIDS.  Members of our community continue to suffer without the basic health care they need,” Representative Lofgren said.  “It is hard enough to become infected with this terrible disease, much less lack basic health care while trying to survive.  I am hopeful that this funding will provide basic relief to the victims of this horrible epidemic.”

“Given California’s budget crisis and the unchecked increase in the cost of antiretroviral drugs, federal funding is critical in providing treatment to low-income, uninsured and underinsured HIV-positive individuals,” Representative Honda said.  “The number of people with HIV continues to rise, along with the costs of caring for them, making access to medical care the most immediate and pressing concern in our ongoing fight against this insidious disease.”

The funding will cover basic services such as physician visits, assistance in obtaining medications, home-based and hospice care, substance abuse and mental health services, and other related services.
