Washington, DC – Representatives Lofgren and Honda (D-San Jose) hailed the announcement that the City of San Jose will receive two Department of Transportation grants totaling $12.3 million for the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.  The grants will provide funding for runway and taxiway rehabilitation and also fund the effort to reduce noise in the area surrounding the airport.

“Ensuring that the airport is secure and safe for travelers should be our top priority,” Rep. Lofgren said.  “This grant will not only provide much needed funding to rehabilitate our transportation infrastructure, it will also continue our work to reduce airport noise in our community.”

"As we head into the busy summer travel season, the Mineta San Jose International Airport will continue to accommodate an increasing number of commercial air passengers," Rep. Honda said.  "The grants announced today will alleviate tarmac traffic jams caused by eroding and dilapidated runways, and will mitigate the jet engine noise that often disturbs surrounding communities.  Working with the FAA, these funds will help San Jose limit the problems associated with increased air traffic."

The grants will be distributed as follows: 

• $8,300,000 to Rehabilitate the Runway and Taxiway
• $4,000,000 for Noise Mitigation Measures for Residences within 65 –69 DNL

 The funding award is provided through the Airport Improvement Program of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration, which supports the nation’s airport infrastructure by providing grants for capital improvements.
