South Bay Congresswoman to be the only Northern Californian on panel; vows to bring Silicon Valley’s voice to terrorism panel

Statement of Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) has been appointed today to the new Homeland Security Committee by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Lofgren joins 23 other House Democrats representing a wide ideological and geographical diversity of Democrats on the security panel. Lofgren is one of five Californians on the new panel, and the only member of Congress from Northern California to be appointed to the committee.

“My goal is help bring the genius of Silicon Valley to secure America,” said Lofgren. “I want a strong oversight role over the new Department of Homeland Security, both to help secure our country and to ensure the rights of Americans are not trampled in the process.”

The Select Committee’s oversight of the new Department of Homeland Security will be focused on getting the new Department working effectively and quickly. The Committee has legislative jurisdiction over matters relating to the Homeland Security Act and will play a central role in fighting the war on terrorism.

The Committee will coordinate all House oversight of the Homeland Security Department in the House of Representatives. It will also exercise exclusive legislative jurisdiction over the Homeland Security Act that established the Federal department tasked with protecting the United States from terrorist attack.
