FRANKLIN MCKINLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT IN SAN JOSE TO RECEIVE $1 MILLION IN E-RATE FUNDING

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) announced today $1 million in E-rate funding for the Franklin-McKinley School District in San Jose. The funds will specifically pay for internal connections, Internet access and telecom services at various schools throughout the district. The E-Rate provides discounts to assist most schools and libraries around the country to obtain affordable access to the Internet. The Franklin-McKinney School District was able to qualify for a 90% discount.

"The E-rate has been an incredibly successful program, and it has provided thousands of schools and libraries around the country with affordable Internet access," said Congresswoman Lofgren. "The Internet is a key learning, research and teaching tool for the 21st century, and we need to provide access so our students are competitive in the future."

The E-rate is funded through a fee charged to companies that provide interstate and/or international phone service, otherwise known as Universal Service. Universal Service is also the program that allows low-income individuals with the ability to have residential telephone service. The program was expanded in 1997, with the goal of connecting every school and library to the Internet. The program has been widely successful in providing low cost and affordable Internet access to many areas of the country and school districts that would otherwise be shut out of the information revolution.

Discounts to schools and libraries range from 20%-90% depending on the eligibility of the school or library that is making the application.
