A Right to Choose Single-Sex Education

Education proponents across the political spectrum were dismayed by recent attempts to eradicate the single-gender options in public schools in Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Maine and Florida. We were particularly troubled at efforts to thwart education choice for American students and their families because it is a cause we have worked hard to advance.

South Africa's break with apartheid serves as model for Burma

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi arrived in Washington in September to receive the Congressional Gold Medal and to make the case on behalf of her country for continued U.S. engagement with the Burmese people and the easing of sanctions.

    No Cybersecurity Executive Order, Please

One week after Democrats at their convention in Charlotte, N.C., called for an open Internet that fosters "innovation" and "investment," the Obama administration is readying plans to tighten the government's grip. The White House is preparing an executive order on cybersecurity that unilaterally imposes more mandates and regulations on the private economy.

Unfriendly to women? Not my GOP

In the run-up to the party conventions, new attention has been focused on women's issues in the political sphere. It has been accompanied by claims that the Republican Party is somehow unfriendly to women -- which will be a surprise to the thousands of women attending the convention in Tampa, Florida.

    Curiosity Pays

Early on August 6, 2012, NASA's rover Curiosity executed a perfect landing after an eight-month journey took it an astonishing 325 million miles to Mars, a planet roughly 130 million miles from Earth. It was a huge leap forward for America's space program and for human exploration of our solar system. It reminded us that our innate curiosity leads to great feats of discovery, scientific advancement and improvement of the human condition. And it was a breathtaking moment of national pride and wonder.

Serve Texas' small businesses by halting proposed tax hikes

I set out on my annual bus tour in Texas earlier this month. I have taken a tour of Texas every year since I entered the Senate, traveling thousands of miles across this glorious state and every one of our 254 counties.

Honor our military heroes and their families

We often toss around words like "hero." Perhaps it's because we have far too few of them. Or maybe we've forgotten what it means. We lionize sports stars or celebrities, many of whom are talented and worthy of praise. But they're not heroic.

    What recovery?

June 20th marked the first official day of summer, which means we are now officially at the two-year anniversary of the "recovery summer" - meant to showcase that the Administration's economic policies were working. There isn't much need to point out that we're still looking for some economic sunshine.

    Lives Saved By Prostate Test

Of all the ways government inserts itself into Americans' everyday lives, one of the most insidious is its impingement on the doctor-patient relationship.

    Confronting looming 'tax-mageddon'

Unless Congress and President Barack Obama can reach agreement by the end of this year, steeply higher taxes - amounting to about half a trillion dollars annually - will slam the economy and most taxpayers, starting Jan. 1, 2013. For starters, 25 million middle-income taxpayers will be hit for the first time by the alternative minimum tax.

President's health care law is flawed

Two years ago, against the tide of public opinion, the Democrat-controlled Congress passed President Obama's health care legislation - the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

Let's ensure America's commitment to space exploration

For more than 50 years, human space exploration has inspired Americans. Now more than ever, we must capture the imaginations of our young people if they are to aspire to be the scientists and explorers of the future.

D.C. hypocrisy on Buffett Rule tax

In a rare moment of Washington bipartisanship, The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act beat the odds and was signed into law recently, passing both House and Senate by overwhelming margins.

U.S. space program is not dead; it's working toward new goals

Recently, a group of Cub Scouts visited the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The youngsters had a memorable adventure, riding on a Lunar Rover model, scrambling around in a mock-up space capsule and quizzing retired astronauts about living in zero gravity.

Two Texas women to whom I owe much

For more than two decades, Americans have celebrated the month of March as Women's History Month, giving special tribute to the historic achievements and contributions of women to our society.

    Pass the JOBS Act

Since 1980, small businesses have generated over 60 percent of all new jobs in this country. Small businesses are the best hope that 13 million unemployed Americans have for finding a new job and getting back on their feet. There's nothing more important to moving our recovering economy forward than revving up small businesses.

President's budget plan ignores fiscal challenges

President Barack Obama recently released his Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal. Rather than a blueprint for putting our financial house in order, his budget plan would add more than $11 trillion to the national debt in coming years - in spite of calling for nearly $2 trillion in higher taxes that would only serve to undermine our economic recovery.

Social Security and Medicare reform can't wait

This week, Americans were confronted - yet again - with more of the same refusal by President Barack Obama to take on the greatest long-term threat to our economic and health care security.

‘Penny Plan’ to get financial house in order

Today, we face the most predictable - and preventable - crisis in American history. Consider the flashing warning signs: The U.S. has accumulated more than $5 trillion in new debt in less than four years; total debt recently surpassed our country's gross domestic product (more than $15 trillion), and the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that 2012 will be the fourth consecutive year of more than $1 trillion federal budget deficits.

Government needs to get serious about entitlement reform

The president's annual State of the Union address is an opportunity for our country's elected leader to put aside partisan politics, talk to Congress and the American people about our country's direction and outline his priorities. This speech to the nation has carried even greater weight during the trying times, when Americans look to the president for unifying and inspiring leadership.
