Updated w/ Response: Sensenbrenner Presses Administration on State of H5N1 Studies
Washington,
Nov 15 -
Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Vice Chair of the House Science Committee, today sent a fact-finding letter to the Office of Science and Technology Policy Director John Holdren regarding the state of dual use research (DURC) policy and a voluntary moratorium on H5N1 research following the publishing of two controversial bird flu studies.
“I am still unsatisfied with how the H5N1 issue was handled. The Administration was unprepared for this situation. Dual use research policies will shape the future of our national security and scientific discovery, and I plan to follow DURC policy closely. I hope the scientific community can create its own approach. But failing a consequential DURC policy, Congressional action could be required to ensure security and public health issues are addressed prior to the funding and completion of the research.”
