Service Academy Nominations

Making an Academy Nomination

Each year I nominate a select group of Fifth District high school graduates for admission to the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Those interested in appointment to an academy must obtain a nomination from an official nominating source. This includes Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, the President, the Vice President, and Secretaries of the Navy, Air Force, and Army. An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating source and to more than one academy. Furthermore, those applying through my office must meet the following requirements as of July 1st of the year entering the academy. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 17 years of age, but not have passed their 23rd birthday, unmarried, and a resident of the Fifth District.

To obtain a nomination packet, students should contact my District Office in the spring of their junior year in high school. In addition, I would advise making a contact with the academies directly to become acquainted with their application process.

Please note that completed applications are due in my District Office no later than 5 p.m. (central) on October 15, 2012. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered for nomination.

Once the application deadline has expired, candidates with completed applications will be interviewed by a member of my selection committee. Evaluations will be based on the student’s academic record, extracurricular and athletic activities, physical aptitude, ACT or SAT scores, leadership ability, medical qualifications, and motivation. I am capable of nominating up to ten students for possible appointment. Of the ten students, one will be selected as my principal nominee who will be guaranteed an offer of appointment if all admissions criteria is met, and nine will be alternate nominees who will compete with other alternate nominees for admission.

Information may be obtained from my District Office by calling or writing:
