Congresswoman Matsui Helps Launch “Make It In America” Initiative for 112th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) and members of the House Democratic Caucus launched the “Make It In America” initiative for the 112th Congress.  The Make It In America initiative is a plan to support job creation by encouraging businesses to make products in the U.S. by supporting infrastructure and R&D investments in areas like education and energy innovation.  During the 111th Congress, Congresswoman Matsui was a leader on the Make It In America agenda, and her legislation to expand clean energy technology manufacturing and exports was one of the bills that passed the House as part of this initiative.

“America’s economy became a world leader in large part due to our manufacturing sector; increased manufacturing leads to well-paying jobs and a strong middle class,” said Congresswoman Matsui.  “But, over the last decade, America lost nearly one third of its manufacturing jobs.  Continuing to promote initiatives that support American manufacturing and help businesses export abroad is so important to strengthening our economy today and enabling us to compete in the future.”

The mission of the Make It In America initiative is to foster innovation, invest in our workforce, fight for a fair playing field for American companies, and help American companies compete abroad.  Several Make It In America bills that became law during the last Congress cut taxes, created loans for small businesses, lowered costs of raw materials, and ended tax loopholes that encourage companies to ship jobs overseas.  During this Congress, Congresswoman Matsui and House Democrats plan to continue to promote Make It In America bills that reinforce the manufacturing industry and help American companies compete in a global market.  Congresswoman Matsui recently reintroduced her legislation that passed the House last Congress, the Clean Energy Technology Manufacturing and Export Assistance Act.

The Matsui legislation would support the development, implementation, and sustainability of a National Clean Energy Technology Export Strategy, and help U.S. clean tech firms with export assistance and navigating foreign markets.  It would also strengthen America’s domestic manufacturing by promoting policies that will reduce production costs and encourage innovation, investment, and productivity in the domestic clean energy technology industry.  Such policies will help increase the demand for clean technology, and enable American companies to expand and hire.

“It is essential that our country has in place a long-term vision in order to win the future.  The Make It In America agenda provides such a vision, and my legislation helps our country develop a plan to compete in the global clean energy sector,” added Matsui.  “By investing in new and innovative industries like clean energy, and ensuring that American businesses have the support and backing they need to keep jobs here, America’s economy will continue to be a world leader.”
