  1. Today, the Department of Education announced a Race to the Top grant for as much as $10 million for Carson City School District. This is wonderful news for Carson City’s students, teachers and parents. As someone whose life was transformed by teachers, I understand the importance of providing all Nevadans with the opportunity to receive a quality education.
  2. My office held a ticket drawing for Nevadans to attend the upcoming Presidential Inauguration and today I picked the first 10 names. Of the ten Nevadans selected, 5 are from Las Vegas, 1 is from Henderson, 2 are from Reno, 1 is from Carson City, and 1 is from Baker. I am honored to provide Nevadans from all over the state with the opportunity to attend the Inauguration ceremonies and be a part of history in the making.
  3. Tonight, families and friends will gather and kindle the lights in celebration of Hanukkah’s first night. In each generation, hope and persistence give individuals strength during times of struggle and adversity. The story of Hanukkah reminds us of those important themes. I wish everyone celebrating Hanukkah a Chag Sameach. In the evenings ahead, may the candles you light shine as brightly as our future.
  4. My friend Manny Pacquiao is entering the ring against another great competitor, Juan Manuel Marquez, and I know it will be a great fight.
  5. Today Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with K Road Moapa Solar to provide up to 250 megawatts of solar power to more than 118,000 homes in California. The K Road Moapa solar power installation...
will be located on the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians tribal land north of Las Vegas. This public-private-tribal partnership will create hundreds of jobs and is a powerful example of the benefits clean energy can bring to Nevada’s economy.

  6. Today, Senate Republicans blocked a treaty to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities around the world. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was modeled on U.S. law, considered the gold standard on equal opportunity laws for the disabled. It is a sad day when we cannot pass a treaty that simply brings the world up to the American standard for protecting people with disabilities because the Republican party is in thrall to extremists and ideologues. Our wounded veterans and millions more around the world deserve better.
  7. To protect millionaires, Speaker Boehner’s offer would force middle class families to pay higher taxes. Raising taxes on the middle class is bad policy and flunks the test of balance. To protect the middle class while reducing the deficit, simple math dictates that tax rates must rise on the top two percent of taxpayers next year. The sooner Republicans grasp that reality, the sooner we can avoid the fiscal cliff. Democrats are willing to compromise, but any agreement must protect the middle class.
  8. Today I spoke with federal and local officials about potential floods in the Reno-Sparks area this weekend. I am closely monitoring the incoming storm and have asked FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers that they watch it closely and be prepared for the worst. I told Governor Sandoval and local officials to notify me immediately if they need assistance. I ask all Nevadans to be alert, heed the advice of first responders and local officials, and most importantly stay safe. Go to RGJ.com for latest news and alerts.
  9. For his birthday today, a favorite Mark Twain quote which describes Lake Tahoe - "I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords."
  10. Today I joined my colleagues Senator Dick Durbin, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Senator Patty Murray to talk about what we must do to avoid the fiscal cliff. Republicans need to put specifics on the table to protect middle class families.
  11. Today I met with Mexican President-Elect Enrique Peña Nieto. We agreed on the importance of continuing to work together and strengthening the Mexico-U.S. relationship. — at United States Capitol.

  13. I wish all Nevadans and Americans across the country a very happy Thanksgiving. This day gives us a chance to appreciate the many opportunities we are given throughout the year and we give thanks to those who protect our country but are unable to be with their families and friends at this time. As we join with friends and family, I hope we can consider ways to make this holiday season special for everyone in our communities.
  14. I am pleased that the Los Angeles City Council today approved a 25-year power purchase agreement with K Road Moapa Solar to provide solar power to more than 118,000 homes in California. The K Road Moapa solar power installation, which will be located on the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians tribal land north of Las Vegas, is expected to create 400 jobs during peak construction and 15-20 permanent jobs.
  15. For 50 years the Cold War posed a dire threat to the security of our nation and many Nevadans committed their lives to maintaining peace at home and around the world. I led an effort to pass a law which made sure their courageous actions were remembered. On Saturday staff from my Las Vegas office attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a new memorial that will recognize Nevada’s Cold War heroes.
