HONORING OUR VETERANS

Dear Friend,

Throughout our nation’s history, the men and women of our Armed Forces have answered the call to protect America.  Our veterans and their families have my profound appreciation for the sacrifices they have made for our country.

As the daughter of two World War II veterans, I will always work to preserve the freedoms that our veterans risked their lives to defend.   I will also work to honor our country’s commitment to ensure that veterans receive the care and support they have earned.  That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to preserve our local VA campuses, Montrose and Castle Point, to serve exclusively the needs of our veterans.

I’m honored to work side-by-side with Denis Castelli, a distinguished Vietnam veteran and our Veterans Advocate, focusing on outreach and constituent services.

We have also formed a Veterans Advisory Committee to keep us informed of our veterans’ needs and of opportunities to serve them better.  If you would like to speak with Denis or with the Committee about veterans' issues, please call our District offices at (845) 206-4600.

As we observe this Veterans Day, 2011, please take a moment to thank our veterans for all they have done to defend our nation and protect our most fundamental right to be free.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, M.D.

HERE TO SERVE YOU

VETERANS AFFAIRS ISSUES

Our staff can help to assure that you receive the care and compensation you have earned.  If you need assistance with an issue relating to the Department of Veterans Affairs, we are equipped to help with such issues as checking the status of existing claims or filling out an application for VA benefits, such as VA Disability, VA Pension, VA Widows Benefits, or the GI Bill.

OBTAINING SERVICE MEDALS AND SERVICE RECORDS

If you were awarded medals during your time in service but never received them, our office can help.  We can also assist in obtaining your service records.

VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT

Organized by the Library of Congress, the Veterans History Project preserves an important part of our heritage for future generations by collecting the stories from those who have served our nation in times of war. Click here for more information.

ONLINE VETERANS CAREER FAIR

The Department of Veterans Affairs and Milicruit.com have teamed up to provide a virtual recruitment center to provide veterans a way to visit employer booths, view and apply for jobs, chat with recruiters during career fairs, and email them directly off hours or in between event days, and from the comfort and convenience of home.  More information can be found by going to www.va.gov or by going to http://www.vetsuccess.gov.

MAKE THE CONNECTION CAMPAIGN

Make the Connection, a new campaign launched by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is creating ways for Veterans and their family members to connect with the experiences of other Veterans—and ultimately to connect with information and resources to help them confront the challenges of transitioning from service, face health issues, or navigate the complexities of daily life as a civilian. The campaign’s central focus is a website, www.MakeTheConnection.net, featuring numerous Veterans who have shared their experiences, challenges, and triumphs.

SERVING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED US

HUDSON VALLEY VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM CAMPUS PROTECTION ACT

I introduced H.R. 2642 to prevent the lease or disposal of facilities at the Montrose and Castle Point VA campuses for private development. We cannot afford to cut important services for veterans and we will work to see that the best care continues to be provided in the Hudson Valley.

THE VETERANS OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ACT OF 2011

With over one million veterans out of work, H.R. 2433 will help our veterans get meaningful jobs.  I joined a strong majority in the House of Representatives to pass this important legislation, which will help provide our veterans with the training necessary to compete in the 21st-century jobs marketplace.

ESTABLISHING A SELECT COMMITTEE ON POW AND MIA AFFAIRS

I am a co-sponsor of H. Res. 111, which establishes a committee to conduct full investigation of all unresolved matters related to any unaccounted U.S. personnel from the Vietnam era, the Korean conflict, World War II, Cold War Missions, the Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

MEMORIALIZE OUR GUARDSMEN AND RESERVISTS ACT

Men and women in the National Guard and Reserves who do not serve on active duty are not currently eligible for a government memorial headstone or marker for their gravesite.  I introduced H.R. 2305 to correct this inequity by making available for purchase, through the Department of Veterans Affairs, headstones or markers for those who stood ready but were not called to active duty.

THE COLD WAR SERVICE MEDAL ACT

I am a co-sponsor of H.R. 1968, which authorizes the creation of a Cold War Service Medal.  This would be awarded to members of the Armed Forces who served our nation honorably during the Cold War.
