Runyan Announces FEMA Funding

Washington, D.C. – On Friday November 30th, the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that the town of Beach Haven will receive a grant of more than $3 Million to help aide in the clean-up of debris from Hurricane Sandy.

“I am pleased that Beach Haven was included in a round of grants to help with the cleanup of Hurricane Sandy,” said Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ).  “These funds will go a long way in helping cleanup all the debris spread throughout the town.  Obviously this is only the first step in what will be a long process, but these grants show just how committed the federal government is to assisting our communities rebuild.  I will continue to do all that I can to ensure that our state gets the resources it needs.”

According to FEMA, the winds of Hurricane Sandy generated a debris pile that was 473 feet long and 473 wide with an average height of 10 feet, which is 82,956 cubic yards of debris.  In addition to this waste, 44,873 cubic yards of sand was strewn throughout the town.  Because the debris posed a risk to the citizens, New Jersey mandated that the debris had to be cleaned up immediately.  The $3.6 million grant is a 75% share of the estimated costs of cleaning up the debris.
