Statement on Attack on U.S. Consulate in Libya

“I share the anger and outrage felt by all Americans today regarding the death of four of our fellow citizens, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.  The extremists who committed this atrocity must be brought to justice. While we appreciate that senior Libyan officials have verbally condemned this act of cowardice, their actions, both to apprehend and bring to justice those responsible for this attack and to protect our remaining diplomatic personnel, are of the utmost importance.

As with the men and women of our Armed Forces, America’s diplomatic and civilian personnel serve with great bravery and skill. We are blessed by and forever indebted to these true heroes for their service. Our thoughts and prayers today are with the families of our four fallen countrymen. This heinous attack is a stark reminder that, eleven years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, America still faces lethal enemies who continue to target our citizens and our allies. We must remain vigilant in our efforts to keep America secure and continue to support our fellow Americans who serve on the front lines of democracy.”
