America Needs a Balanced Budget
Posted on October 04, 2011

Sixteen years ago, Congress failed to pass a balanced budget amendment by a single Senate vote. At that time, the national debt was approximately $5 trillion. That solitary vote resulted in our nation adding almost $10 trillion to the debt in the years since.

For those who were confident that Washington could show self-restraint without legal force, this has been an extremely expensive lesson. Both Republicans and Democrats alike are guilty for the hefty tab on our national credit card. And unfortunately, it is one that our children and our grandchildren will be forced to pay.

Now, America is in a full-blown debt crisis. Bipartisan budget analysts have warned that our nation is rapidly approaching a level of debt that will completely halt our economic growth.

Even so, the President’s budget proposal has our national debt increasing to an unspeakable $20.3 trillion dollars by the year 2020 – and its projections include literally never-ending deficits. This is a path that I refuse to take.

Like a family that digs themselves into a financial pit, it is time for the United States to spread its expenditures out on the table and go through them line by line – eliminating everything that is not absolutely necessary.

But first, we need to cut up the credit cards.

As long as Washington still has access to money, the federal government will  continue to burn through it. And if there are any loopholes, we all know that they will be found and exploited.

To attack this issue head on, I authored my Balanced Budget Amendment. It is designed to be an ironclad solution to halt the outrageous spending in its tracks. It also includes more secure defenses against tax increases or spending loopholes than any other bill; it requires a 2/3 majority to raise your taxes and an actual Declaration of War to allow any deficit spending.

While America stands on shaky financial ground today, we can reclaim the economic growth and security of the past – but only if we take the most aggressive measures starting right now. Join me in telling Congress that now, more than ever, we need to get back to fiscal sanity and a balanced budget.

Dear Dr. Broun, A balanced budget is important but we are spending TOO much money at the Federal level. Entire departments, such as Commerce, Energy and Education should be phased out. The Federal spending should be reduced below year to year levels. Social Security should be placed back into a Trust Fund that is not part of the Federal budget! Social Security could have been self sustainable had the Federal politicians not been so greedy in the 1960's to grab these funds and use them for the Federal budget rather than protect the funds and pay a proper interest rate on the funds. Medicare should be increased to cover the projected costs when a participant reaches retirement age or 65. We are so glad to see your 10th District cover Washington County and look forward to working with you to do the 4 way test in the future. Thanks for joining us in Sandersville recently. Dr. Broun, I am totally with you. Years ago I read everything I could at a small local library on how finances work on the government level - it was all over my head and I thought, "well, I guess somehow you can just keep spending money you don't have...but I don't see how." I am wiser now and see that it is as simple as I thought back then - you can't keep spending more than have! You certainly can't get so far into debt that you can't even pay the interest each month...I say that people who lead our country that way are traitors and should be charged with treason.

Dear Mr. Broun, I have a couple of questions,( 1) Under what law are cell phones, being issued for free, without, photo ID,address,or proof of income?I have seen this take place on 3 occasions in GA. Whya are the folks that work charged ,and those that choose not to work given a phone? what is the bill or law # please? , (2), I work self-employed and ,I am struggling mightily, yet I see folks on section 8 getting ,2 knee replacements, free phone ,free home ,free ac, free electric, and food stamps , while ,I can't scrape up MRI money > This issue is unacceptable, why even continue to try in a country that allows those that don't get all the gov't benefits. (3)I do not have health insurance ,and go to a place called Medlink, based upon my income,my father passed at 50 ,I am 47 suffering with very same conditions as he did ,basically, heart disease ,blood pressure, and arthiritis,I am continually told at med link that quote(Charles you do not have any money)unquote , yet I turn around and see the moochers milking the cow 24/7. Med link is accused of stealing 200 million in State of California alone, please investigate these crooks . Finally ,We need a knew investigation or vote on GA Lottery, This money is being stolen hand over fist according to local lottery employees ,I have spoken to.These Diebold machines need to be banned, to think in 2012 ,the only way to get voting receipt is to vote absentee ballot is insanity , thanks for listening, With Cordial Regards,I Remain Charles Peele
