It’s time to replace Obamacare with market-based solutions
Posted on January 19, 2011
As Republicans today offer a vote to repeal Obamacare, a major cornerstone in the Pledge to America, liberals scramble to defend their “no” vote. The latest cry from Democrats is that repealing healthcare will increase the federal deficit.

Only in Washington can you create $2.6 trillion in new government spending and claim to reduce the deficit.

Former Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin countered arguments that the CBO score supports this assertion. Mr. Holtz-Eakin wrote in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, “Even if CBO's analysis were flawless, the authors of the ACA guaranteed a misleading bottom line. Their legislative prescriptions were written to create deficit reduction only on paper -- not in reality.”

According to the House Budget Committee, the CBO score double counts approximately $521 billion in “savings” and fails to include major expenses, such as the cost of setting up and administering this new massive bureaucracy and addressing Doc Fix.

I introduced legislation, H.R. 299, this week that would repeal Obamacare and replace it with four commonsense solutions that have been endorsed by members on both sides of the aisle.

H.R. 299 would reduce the costs of the health care through market based solutions, such as allowing individuals to shop for health care across state lines and providing 100 percent tax deductions for healthcare expenses. In addition, H.R. 299 would ensure all Americans could still access health care through high-risk pools and state-based association pools.

Residents in the 10th District of Georgia overwhelmingly oppose Obamacare. I am proud to fulfill my commitment to repeal it and replace it with commonsense solutions.

Just listened to you on WLS Chicago. Sounds to me you have a solution to this Health care bill that will do as advertised. I have worked in a medical center for 29 years and people don't have a clue how their care will change if this Obama monstrosity is allowed to go on. For one, the ability for primary care facilities to up-grade and maintain their equipment will be impacted as the re-imbursements are cut back even further. Staffing levels will be cut as the your Dr. inability to hire and maintain staff levels. Further more the training of students to become Dr’s at an average cost of over $400,000 and 13 years of collage for medical school will dramatically drop as the ability to make money prohibits repayment. I could go on but as you know the picture isn’t pretty. Please keep on course and help others see the light of common sense.

This is in response to your comments made on twitter about the presidents' speech last night. First, twittering during the speech is highly inappropriate. Second, where were you when Bush was spending money like a drunken sailor in Iraq? Where was the fiscal responsibility then? Were you worried about the debt your children were going to have to pay back then? Third, do you really think that peoples' health care should be for profit so they can continue to deny care, because of "preexisting" conditions? What happened to the "hypocratic oath" about doing no harm? I guess you can only get quality health care if you have a lot of money. Oh well, at least "Dollar" Bill Maguire, the ceo of United Healthcare, can still make his $1,000,0000 a year. God Bless America. Third, if you really want to do something innovative, how about raising the salary cap on people paying into social security? Or would that offend some of your friends and campaign contributors that make over $107,000 a year? Just a thought. Thank you for the time.

Have a little respect for the office of the president Dr. Broun. Twittering during the president's state of the union speech? Grow some manners and show some dignity, or do the country a favor and find something else to do for a living.

Thanks for making my home state of Georgia appear to be the home of survivalists and idiots. Staying in your office so that you can more comfortably tweet insults at the President is a bit high school-ish isn't? As for your healthcare "proposal," it would give us more uninsured Americans in 5 years than now and does nothing to address costs. It does preserve the right of doctors, insurers and pharma's to make unlimited amounts of money. Hardly a surprise, doctor. Your bad ideas are you own business, but please do try to buck up and play adult by actually attending the next time the President gives a speech to both houses of Congress and the entire country. It would just be so ... adult of you.

Say “NO” to a “CENTRAL REGULATORY GOVERNMENT”! Ø Repeal the ObamaCare plan! With: “the common sense health care reform and affordability act “ o Repeal ObamaCare in its entirety! If can’t Defund or Repeal & Pass New HealthCare at the same time! o People should purchase the type of insurance they want and fits their family NEEDS; People can pay for their cable TV, cell phones, etc… THEN THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN HEALTH! o The Federal Government; Keep as much as possible at the state level: (#1) remove company mandated insurance, (#2) Offer private insurance to Military, seniors, etc… (#3) Make it easy to purchase over state lines. (#4) Fund Extreme Terminal Care for people that can’t afford the massive cost of healthcare due to non-insurance and due to max insurance payout. (#5) NO Government - pubic option, co-op, HMO, etc… Leave it up to the states (#6) No Government Maintained Medical Records. (Ex. Joe the Plumber – release of his private records). Anyone that release/ expose personal records will get 30 years in prison – serve entire sentence. (#7) Allow for early release for generic drugs. [Especially government funded drug research] Help w/ senior prescription drugs. Allow for safe foreign drugs into the country. (#8) Time limit on pre-existing conditions: the pre-existing conditions should have a time limit on conditions that can be cured. (#9) Must have a valid ID at time of service, illegals will be turned over to ICE after service, ONLY Emergency care will be performed for illegals. (#10) EIC & Tax Returns can be used to pay owed medical bills. (#11) Eliminate Government Funded Foods; High Fructose corn syrup, Frozen processed foods, High sugar, etc… (#12) End all Federal government giveaways – electronic carts & wheel chairs, other devices – let the states do it. o States (#1) Set-up Medical Savings Accounts for all people (#2) Should implement TORT REFORM [It will reduce malpractice insurance], procedural limits on the ability to file claims, Have automatic reimbursement on fraudulent suits, capping the awards of damages & Limit Lawyer Fees (both sides). (#3) Encourage Long Term Preventative care; encourage Preventative Health measures, Clinics for the people w/ Sliding scale payment. Doctors, resident Doctors, Physician Assistants and nurses can work off their medical loans in the clinics. People NEED to be responsible for their family and self. Encourage Private groups, industry & people to help their fellow citizens. The states can take care of their own people. (#4) Doctors - Protect from fraudulent suits. (#5) Extreme Care testing of New methods & Drugs – Protect from fraudulent suits. (#6) Require a Physical/ check-up before enrollment into school. o Insurance Companies; (#1) should make all plans clear and to the point so everyone understands NO questions. (#2) MUST honor the coverage agreed on or heavy fines will be placed on the insurance company. The all fines will pay for the patient’s medical bills and all fees due to insurance refusal to pay. (#3) There should be a standard and reasonable annual and lifetime limits; when extreme care, due to insurance max, and the Government would take control of the financial control of the patient. (#4) Family insurance, to cover their children from the age of 18 to 25 years of age, as long as they are in school. (#5) Also allow for insurance, if in an adoption process, cover the birth of the child and all medical fees for mother, at time of birth. This will help in adoption process so children can be adopted.

I also think you are disrespectful, rude, and just another member of the extreme right-wing. All you seem to do is waste time trying to repeal legislation that most Americans want. It is a huge waste of time! Both parties need to sit down, shut up, and listen to each other. Open your mind and listen! Then listen to the American people. All that is in the media is the extreme crazies rants. Let's have some moderation and compromise, ohhh...a dirty word, compromise is, grow up!

I am embarrassed. Get your facts right if you want to be an effective rep of GA.
  • Darrell Holmes commented on 1/27/2011
As a conservative who has respect for others I think you should be ashamed to be so childish as to tweet about the presidents state of the union address when you did not even bother to attend. Treat the office and your job with respect and quit using bible quotes as an excuse to defame others. Represent with respect. Be a man and take it up directly with the president as opposed to hiding and tweeting.
  • Bola Faj commented on 1/27/2011
For being a physician..... you are an GREAT embarrassment to the rest of us in the noble profession. You are also unprofessional in 1.your representation and disrespect for the office of the president and 2. in representing the good people who voted you in. Twitting while the President of the free world (your Boss) is giving the State of the Union address? How disrespectful!! What message are you sending to your constituents or the next generation Watching you a few minutes ago on CNN- chanting the same GOP rhetoric-"socialism" "overspending" and insinuating that the president is an enemy of the state/constitution (?because of his african ancestry) which he also has sworn to up hold really makes me wonder if you actually have sat down to think through the issues facing the people. As a PHYSICIAN, you do not seem to care if 60% of your fellow americans (whose tax dollars pay for YOUR fine insurance and pay check) have no insurance or are underinsured. This is shameful. I expect you as well as others in the house to figure out how to make it work and let wonderful, work-able healthcare reform amongst other things be the LEGACY of your generation and time in the house and stop all this mindless twittering (pun intended).

All of you on here talking about respecting the Office of President , Obama himself is not and has not Respected the office or this country By not SHOWING WE THE PEOPLE anything about HIS PASS. HE himself on his OWN website Says he was Born A BRITISH CITIZEN because of his Father Being KENYAN. HE IS NOT a "Natural BORN CITZEN" IT TAKES TWO (2) US CITIZENS to MAKE HIM A "NATURAL BORN CITIZEN". This IS REQUIRED to BE PRESIDENT. HE COULD OF BE BORN IN THE OVAL OFFICE AND HE DOES NOT QUALIFY.
  • Karen Lee commented on 1/28/2011
Your interview on CNN was typical rhetoric and you sir do not care a flip about the American people or the constitution, anyone that is in a public office has the responsibility to report the truth and facts not to skew it to make you get elected again due to the poison the radio, pundits and politicians have been incorrectly telling the public lies and hate. HOW DARE YOU HOLD THE CONSTITUTION, OUR FOREFATHERS WOULD BE ASHAMED AT OUR CURRENT POLITICIANS CAMPAIGING AND GRANDSTANDING COSTING REAL AMERICANS, REAL JOBS, REAL HEALTH CARE, GIVING ENTILTEMENTS TO CORPORATIONS OVER AMERICANS ! SHAME ON YOU

If you are truly interested in decreasing the cost of healthcare and controlling the cost in the future then I would suggest that you introduce legislation to stop CMS from taking direction and recommendations from RUC or at the very least have the representation on the committee not be secretive and represent the primary care physicians in the proper ratios. You might not know who RUC is, and that would not be surprising since most people don’t including many in the medical field. American Medical Association’s Relative Value Scale Update Committee -- or RUC, a secretive, 29 person, specialist-dominated panel. Since 1991, the RUC has been the main, if unofficial, adviser on Medicare physician reimbursement – how specific procedures should be valued - to what is now called the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Many Medicaid and commercial health plans follow Medicare’s lead on payment, so the RUC’s influence is sweeping Over the last 20 years it has driven the cost of healthcare across the country up by pushing a system of procedures. Very little primary care physicians sit on the committee and therefore fees for them have be diminishing over the years. Recently, a Wall Street Journal expose and a New York Times column by Princeton economist Uwe Reinhardt detailed how vast health care resources are steered by RUC If you are interested in change that is meaningful and long lasting Robert M. These market based solutions need to include health savings accounts. I believe HSA's will play a major role in health care reform and we need a dramatic increase in employer HSA contributions.

We need to repel Obama OUT OF OFFICE!!! tHE MAN HAS DONE NOTHING THAT I CAN SEE TO MAKE LIFE BETTER OR EASIER FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THE ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE. He does not cross his heart when the National Anthem or Pledge of Allegience is spoken. His kicking in that door was the act of a spoiled child instead of a resonsible President. At one time, America was the greatest nation in the world. Now, because of Obama, we are in last place. He has taken $500 BILLION out of MEDICARE- a fund that was NOT to b used for anythng BUT MEDICARE. He was given 3 TRILLION - what happened to that? He has spent and spent but I can see no difference except putting us more in debt- WAKE UP AMERICA!!

Here's an idea. For those that get food stamps, welfare checks, one of the requirements should be to take a drug test first. We HAVE to control the amont of money that goes into these programs. I have heard young girls that have 5 or 6 small children with her, comment to her friend with her say, as soon as this child is born, I'm going to XXXmore in food stamps, WIC, and XXX more i my check. Now tha tell me we are paying for these people to have more children tht they really don't want just to get more money. Why not require a drug test- if failed-they get no assistance that month.Or after they have 2 cildren - welfare will not pay for any more. No, I don't consider this being communist-I consider this sving BILLIONS of dollars each year that can be put to help the elders or help reduce the deficit. Anybody else think tthis is a good idea?
  • Judy Todd commented on 10/26/2011
Obama has managed to get America more in debt than ever before in history. He keeps asking for more-as long as we give it to him- he'll keep spending. He doesn't care about America. He doesn't even cross his heart at the Pledge of Allegience. When he gives a speech it's more like an election speech- he always says the same thing. America needs change-yet people keep losing their jobs and more and more retailers are going out of business. America, are you still listening to his lies? Do you still believe in change? The only change I see is this President running us in the ground. Did you see him kick the door open ?? Like a spoiled child who cannot have his way. He makes America embarrassd in front of other nations. We've got to get him out of there. In 2012- PLEASE look at what he has done and don't give him the chance to do it any more.

Dr. Broun, I appreciate all the help you gave to me when I needed help on an issue I could not get resolved. It feels my heart with PRIDE that somebody in Congress or politics in general will do what they say. You always answer my e-mails or phone calls, you make me feel like y voice really does count-that my problems really matter and then you help to get it solved. America needs you in the President's seat- maybe then things- good things would really get done. I know you care about your constituents and the nation. I know it matters to you that the President is breaking our Constitutional rights and laws. I sincerely hope America does NOT choose him for another term. My vote is with you in Congress and I really apprciate you. I just wanted you to know that somebody out there is grateful.
