How my OPTION Act Affects You
Posted on March 22, 2012

This week, I introduced H.R. 4224, the Patient OPTION Act.  It’s a comprehensive healthcare overhaul bill that lays the foundation for affordable and accessible healthcare for all Americans.  We’re getting great feedback on it so far.  In fact, the conservative group Freedom Works has endorsed my OPTION Act – calling it the best healthcare bill yet.

Let me tell you about a few important reforms that my OPTION Act would set into motion and how they would directly affect you.

First of all, it would completely repeal Obamacare.  That means no more worries about higher premiums, the rationing of care, or forceful mandates.

Next, my OPTION Act would allow you to deduct all of your healthcare expenses – including insurance – from your tax return.  This would instantly allow millions of Americans to keep more of their hard earned tax dollars.

The OPTION Act would reform Health Savings Accounts so that you or your employer can deposit higher amounts of your paychecks into these accounts.  That money is then yours to keep permanently, and you can do whatever you please with it.

Additionally, you would be able to look across state lines for the most competitive prices when purchasing health insurance.

Moreover, if you are out of work or if your employer doesn’t provide health insurance, my OPTION Act would allow groups to form associations that could bargain for low prices and then provide coverage for its members.

And perhaps most notably, my OPTION Act saves Medicare by transforming it into a more flexible premium assistance program.

These are the kinds of reform that Americans have been telling me that they want and need, and as a doctor I can tell you that the OPTION Act is truly the best prescription for our healthcare system.  In just 51 pages, my bill gets rid of all of the threats of Obamacare, totally revamps American healthcare financing, and saves our Medicare program.

Please urge everyone you know to voice their support for the OPTION Act, and I will keep you posted on our progress here in Washington.

So...what was that pathetic amendment you just brought up then retracted? In what way are you "looking forward" to debating that again? Who raised you, that you'd be the type of person to LOOK FORWARD to arguing that we should roll back civil rights? Your mama should be ashamed.

Dr Broun, What about those of us who are retirees or recent retirees. who have worked in the private sector as non-government employees? We have paid into Social Security and Medicare since wI started working in the 1960's. Mny of us worked beyond my "entitled" SS retirement age and have continued to pay into both programs. It is interesting that now we "baby boomers" who have paid into a program that was supposed to be "money in the bank" for our future healthcare insurance and retirement saving; who had no choice of opting out;; most who have had no or few pension funds ( went by the wayside because companies saw no need to provide because its emplyees were already putting money into a fund with company match in a government run "retirement fund"), we are considered villians because we want to dip into funds which are being touted as "entitlement funds". Yes, we all ARE ENTITLED to those funds and even more than what the government is unwilling to distribute.. We and our employers, PAID for those benefits. We paid upfront a monthly premium for 40+ years to cover healthcare insurance needs in our senior years when we may not be able to afford to pay for healthcare out of pocket; we put monthly deposits into the Social Security "bank" to have a monthly distribution at the end of our working lives. It is not our fault that Congress spent that money for their pet projects. Yes, we are ENTITLED, to those funds! That IS our money that we put away in an account that was supposed to be secured. If we had put that money on a bank it would be there and available for all of us to retrieve at a far greater rate than the government is willing to distribute. with interest!. It is not the retiree who is abusing the system by asking for our money; it is Congress who has stolen our funds and is trying to blame us for wanting what is our due. Cut the waste from all departments ( thousands here and millions there all adds up); put back into the funds ALL the money used for pork; replace the billions taken out by Obama from Medicare to fund Obamacare!. Repeal Obamacare. Yes, we are ENTITLED to that money; it is ours. If we put it in a bank or even a pillowcase it would be there for us. Don't act like we are expecting something for nothing---THAT IS OUR MONEY; IT THE GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO RETURN THAT MONEY BACK TO US NOW THAT WE ARE OF THE AGE TO START WITHDRAWING IT FROM OUR SO CALLED "GOVERNMENT BANK ACCOUNT"!!! To those of you who entered the workforce later than we did, please remember, 401Ks, etc were only open to the masses in the '80s. Even those of us who took advantage of those plans, have lost masses in the stock crashes of 2001 and 2008 just as many of you did. Now Obama wants to tax those funds at high tax rates, erroding them further. The difference is that those of us in our 60s/ 70's don't have time to recover our losses before we have to depend on those funds. Dr Broun, why don't you offer a bill that is aimed at reducing wastful funding, extends the retirement age of government workers to that of SS age requirements; return money that has been taken out for pork/ wasteful spending; bring your Congressional/ all government benfits in line with the private secto non-executve lever; puts ALL government employees., including you, in the SS/ Medicare program? Get rid of the Governemnt Entitlement Program of Congress--you do not pay--you are the ones who are taking something for nothing. Don't villinize those of us who paid our fair share. Thank you, Kay Woodruff

I am finding that one of the biggest problems are the dentists in our local area who are no longer accepting Wellcare, Medicaid etc. Wellcare has a list of providers a mile long but none of the providers are accepting Wellcare anymore due to the fact that they claim they are getting paid 1/10 of what they should be paid so therefore, if you have a child on Wellcare and you need a local dentist there are none. You have to travel 50 miles one way to get a dentist that accepts Wellcare. Majority of the people cannot afford to travel those kind of miles due to gas prices. So what are you going to do about this issue and getting back the care that the children deserve locally. Dentistry is a very important factor in our health and well being and the dentists should get paid their fair share, so that they will continue to service the children in the local areas. Living in the North Georgia mountains and having to travel to Gainesville is absolutely unacceptable! Thank you.

Thank you Dr. Broun for your attempt to repel Obama Care and the effort that you and your staff have put into HR4224. It atleast makes sense. One other thing if you don't mind. On your opening internet page, in the lower left hand corner which you refer to as your 4-way test.. May I suggest that you consider changing the order inwhich you consider legislation that comes before the House to be voted on. Number 1 moved to No. 2 and No. 2 to the first position. Everything else is in line, so go for it. Thanks again for HR4224 and let us pray that we will have the opporunity to vote for it and the Senate steps up and passes it also. It will pass the House. Again thanks, SFC Jerry Smith, Hampton, VA 23664

I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents...

Mr. Broun, I have a question about the up rising of the middle east. I have my own views and they were made by the media which seems to be sending "Mixed" messages. While the economy is bad, it also seems like the american people are being bullied by the "terrorist". Like myself some of us are feeling threaten and it seems like the american people are at the mercy of the terrorist. WHAT IS THE PRESIDENT DOING TO STOP THIS?????

Sir, YOU as a Congressman should have to accept this "care" that you want, including the "premium assistance" i.e the "chance" to find affordable insurance at your age of 68. Do YOU have a child who is under 26 who is out of college but cannot find a job and so has no insurance? Is this what you intend to repeal as well? By the way, I have another 15 years to retirement. I have worked for private industry for over 20 years. Currently we use my husband's insurance, because it is costs about the same as mine but covers more He works for the federal government, and has the menu of insurance plans to pick from. ALL insurance "rations" care, which only means you have to pay for it out of pocket, and if you have the means, as we do, you save up for it or get a loan or whatever it takes. If you don't, you go bankrupt. Surely as a physician you must know this. How did your patients pay for your house calls?

Just a thank you for your courage to speak about the truth of the evolution myth and to take a stand for the unerring word of God. I am a citizen of Florida, near Tallahassee, but your words will be a blessing both to the ears of God and to your efforts in leading this great country. You get my "You Rock" of the day.

I find it mind boggling that as a Young Earth Creationist you would be assigned any responsibilty for determining Federal science policy. You are a national embarassment!
  • Andrew Brown commented on 10/7/2012
Rep. Broun, A recently released video shows you speaking at a church gathering and making rather strange and illogical remarks, quite at odds with reality. "God's word is true," Broun said, according to a video posted on the church's website. "All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior." You then go on to state your opinion that the earth is 9,000 years old, which, if correct, would mean that every *other* branch of science is also grossly wrong. Are geology, archaeology, and paleography also "lies from the pit of hell," in your opinion? And if so, what on earth are you doing sitting on a committee with jurisdiction over NASA, The Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology? Aren't all of these de facto Satanic organizations, since none of them endorse or views? Hoping for clarity, Regards, Andrew Brown

Curious to read your blogg I searched and found it tonight, yes it´s all night here in Sweden right now. Surprised to find that it wasn´t updated very often. For some reason I expected politicians to use the blogg media as a portal to communicate with there citizens.Probably you have better means. Understood that you were recorded when expressing your opinions about hell, big bang theory, and the age of the earth. I have a humble wonder how you combine your private believes about science and how knowledge is created with the great responsibility being a member of the scientific committee. As I remember already Benjamin Franklin was eager to understand the nature and expand the knowledge beyond the current interpretations of the Bible
  • William Godfrey commented on 10/7/2012
I have just heard your comments regarding evolution theories coming from the pit of hell. Well all I can say that if that is what you think about scientific evidence I cannot imagine how you managed to concoct this OptionAct. If I was American I would have have nothing to do with your plan just on the basis of your thinking about the fundamentals of life.

For centuries, mankind has been attempting to discover how God made everything. They also want to know how He made everything in seven days. They also want to know what the word "day" meant in time value. We are still discovering. Some have jumped to assumptions about everything, but now even scientists are recognizing that something had to "light the match that exploded the gases." God may even enjoy our discoveries of what He has done for He says, "Come; let us reason together." Meanwhile, there are those of us who would vehemently fight at anything or anyone who tried to lord over us. This is the definition of a rebellious nature or a temper tantrum. Scientists have already denounced Darwinian evolution as stated. But pseudo-intellectuals and rebellious people still rage on. This behavior is as old as mankind. David sang, and I echo: Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him. (Psalms 2; KJV) Thank-you, Rep. Paul Broun! If everyone believed this way there would not be the problems in this world that are facing us today. I applaud you! Stand strong! Remember how everyone laughed at Noah, Lot, and Job and mocked them and ridiculed them. Remember the ones that crucified Christ? There will be a special place in Heaven waiting for you.

Greetings! I was disappointed to hear Niel Bortz's criticism of your view on creation. Although I am not a citizen of your state, please be aware that I and undoubtedly many others share your view(s) and we believe and appreciate the opportunity for the diversity of opinion to be represented in Congress. Again, my thanks! William Yount Lauderdale, MS

Senator Broun, I too am curious about your dismissing embryology as among the "lies straight from the pit of hell", could you please elaborate on your reasoning for this either here, or directly to my email account. I only ask as a number of my friends and associates are debating this and I'd like to be able to quote you verbatim on this topic. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.

Today I recieved a phone call from your wife urging me to vote for Mitt Romney. I've heard about 50 automated messages on both sides of the aisle and decided to test the informatioon of the caller before letting them continue, to find their bias. I am 17 years old and barely not old enough to vote this election, but take pride in my political knowledge. When I go to college and into my career, I hope to find myself in Washington, like you. When your wife called, I didn't know who she was but by the time I did, she had encouraged my to look for an internship with you when I am old enough. I am in the NFL (National Forensic Leuge) which allows students to debate in various events. My event is student congress. I thought I should introduce myself, because your opinions have reached me in Ohio and I have met a connection to my desired field and it would be wise to fashion my politics on someone experienced in Congress. If you have any internship programs, I'd love to know as I prepare for college. Speeking of, what is you alma mater?
