Obama Spells Out Big Government Future
Posted on April 13, 2011

Near the end of his fiscal policy speech at George Washington University today, President Barack Obama stated, ‘This larger debate we’re having, about the size and role of government, has been with us since our founding days.’ What he continues to miss, however, is that the level of federal power he subscribes to would make even Alexander Hamilton cringe.

For most of his speech, the President operated under the assumption that federal spending and intervention is the lifeblood of our great nation. Raising taxes is “compassionate,” and placing people in a permanent cycle of dependence is his “vision of America.” Republican budget proposals return powers and money to states and individuals, whereas the President’s plan usurps more power and imposes more outrageous financial burdens and mandates.

As far as the President is concerned, the only way we ‘win the future’ is with more federal intrusion into healthcare, education, science, and business.

Our federal debt – driven by exploding entitlement programs – is spiraling out of control, threatening to capsize our nation into a sea of red ink. Yet the President maintains the fantasy that expanding one of those programs with Obamacare will save one trillion dollars. This was clearly calculated with the same formula that estimated Medicare would cost only $12 billion dollars by 1990, when it actually cost $107 billion.

I have news for the President – America was founded on the blood, sweat, tears, and dreams of men yearning for freedom and liberty. Entrepreneurship, ambition, the family bond, community, individual compassion, and private charity are the fruits of our freedom and the resulting free enterprise system.  Trying to replace those cherished ideals with government dependence is reprehensible – and assuming that our nation can only succeed through federal spending and with the guidance of Washington bureaucrats is arrogant and ignorant.

I call on conservatives around the country to join me in demanding a return to an America built upon our constitutional freedoms, not one driven by power-hungry elitists. Imagine the prosperity we could be enjoying if individuals and states had not had their powers absorbed by the federal government. We wouldn’t be fighting against lowest-common-denominator programs like Obamacare or sweating over how to escape a fiscal crisis. We would be comparing the programs between states, the “laboratories of liberty,” and enjoying the fruits of their innovation. Instead of a massive bureaucracy and a dissatisfactory government controlling your life, policies affecting your day-to-day would be accessible, housed in your state, county, or town seat. We have traveled an incredible distance away from the freedom and prosperity that is our birthright as Americans, but today I urge you to join me in a solid first step back.

Yes, those slaves were clearly yearning for freedom and liberty at the founding of our nation. Took a war to achieve that.

We need to repeal Obamacare now, including the initial huge abounts already that are in effect. Several judges have ruled it unconstitutional. This should be Republicans first and foremst priority and was the mandate of voters who supported the Republican sweep in 2010.

Saw your comments on Roosevelt and the Supreme Court today. Are you a total nutcase! What you said is provably untrue. You are not entitled to your own facts!

I was not able to stay on the phone last night with the discussion, however, I'd like to comment on the budget. I would love to see less of our federal gov't giving away money for tax incentives- At our house, if money is tight, we go on a stricter budget- not spend more money. We have to control the deficit, let the small business owners grow, stop throwing money at big businesses to save them. Let's rely on the principal of free enterprise. I want the government out of health care. The House and the Senate to go over every line item in the budget and throw out things that are self-serving to the politician's state. We need to stop trying to be the savior of the world- we send aid overseas- but in a crisis- I'm not sure other countries would reciprocate. Repeal laws that prevent drilling for oil in our own country. Repeal NCLB! My gosh- I teach special education and my students with IQ's below 65 will NOT be reading on grade level in 2014.

If you really want to get rid of big government you should first get us out of the wars, and then knock down the war budget. Next you put up protective tariffs to encourage domestic industry. Then we get rid of the Federal Reserve Bank. Get rid of the war state first, then get rid of the welfare state over time. We can either have a republic or an empire. We can't have both.

Start with yourselves. Be the same as a citizen and embrace Social Security as your retirement. cut your salary and expenses by 12% , It can be done. Make you subject to all the laws and programs you pass for us. your retirement is ludicrous. Make it the same as you give the military. You do not put your life on the line every day. If anyone should have a 100% salary retirement,it is the soldiers that protect this land.
  • Loretta Dodd commented on 5/9/2011
Dr. Broun: William Sibly has a valid point (05-06-11). Any politition that is serious about cutting the deficit and is willing to make cuts that cause hardship to others MUST first make cuts to Congress as a whole and to benefits and expenses of congressional representatives and themselves individually in order to be credible; until they do--until YOU do, your sincerity like that of Congress as a whole--Democrat and Republican, remains questionable. As members of Congress, put yourselves on Social Security retirement only--THAT is more representative of the situation of the average person in this country, unless you pay for additional retirement out of your salary--which, by the way, needs to be at or less than the median salary of the people you represent. Congress could save money by limiting trips of members of Congress, especially overseas trips, to those approved by the State they represent--AND require that their State pay for one half of the trips--this way there would be no unnecessary "vacations" at taxpayer expense. One report I heard indicated that the money congressional representatives had "left over" from their budget from last year members of Contress gave out as bonuses for their staff; this practice should end. These are only the beginning of a long list of savings Congress can begin to make--it's time you--Congress--do so. For Republicans to convince the public to urge Democrats to cut projects that are their "sacred cows", Republicans must be willing to declare cuts to their own projects that are Republican "sacred cows", and I'd like to hear some specifics that indicate you willing and capable of this effort.
  • Loretta Dodd commented on 5/9/2011
    (1) One way to lower costs of high budget items--the best way to reduce the dificit--is to END "cost overruns"; put into place laws that do not reward but actually penalize businesses that underbid then overcharge, specifically including but not limited to the DOD contractors and subcontractors. (2) There has never, to my knowledge, been a thorough audit of the DOD or intelligence agency budgets. In each of the "wars" since 09/11 I've heard reports of large amounts of money, including cash, simply going missing. Someone is, or reasonably should be--should have been--responsible for every penny of taxpayer money, the sane thing to do is found out who is enabling these problems and remove them from all government service so they cannot repeat the "mistake" or questionable behaviour that leads to these losses. (3) Quit paying dictators to be our "friend"--there is no loyalty or integrity in a bought ally.
  • Joanne Martino commented on 5/11/2011
Rep. Broun, I enjoyed hearing you speak today via C-Span, where you addressed Obama's war on the American economy. The "dozen eggs" was a fine example. While our military leaders talk about sovereign nations of Afghanistan and its neighbors, America has been allowing our southern border to be invaded, and for illegal aliens to be receiving welfare benefits and first dibbs on jobs that require spanish. IMO, creating Spanish language requirements in America was the first step in dividing America. We have lost our melting pot mentality, and now we have a DICTATOR in the White House, who wants to investigate job applicants to disclose their political contributions even before E-Verify is a real law to prescreen job applicants. The 111th Congress was asleep at the wheel, calling illegals "undocumented". And now Florida has elected Marco Rubio posing as a Conservative but has done nothing he promised about securing our borders. Florida's welcome mat has changed our state from Republican to Democrat. It upsets me that both parties want to cut spending in Social Security and Medicare: we were a wealthy Country that wanted to insure that its citizens could live out their lives in dignity. But the trust fund We the People created with our tax dollars has been raided by government and its full of "IOUs"... Where did our Compassionate Conservatism go? To greedy politicians and illegal aliens. I have an idea to help America recover our manufacturing power. There are several groups that include Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, "LEAP". People know that whenever American government declares war, only its weaker citizens will suffer. Ethanol is ruining our cars by putting water in engines that are not designed for that, yet Florida is still using this Corn product, an expensive crop to grow. I suggest the House submit a bill to completely decriminalize Cannabis. This lowly plant grows without water and without fertilizer. Perhaps it can be used to restore the soil that was contaminated with salt from the Mississippi river flooding, purposely done on much farmland. Cannabis used for "recreational purposes" is like wine and therefore can be controlled and taxed like alcohol (e.g. gin which makes you sin), Legalizing cannabis will give us a resource to replace ethanol, it produces oil, fiber soft as silk and strong like nylon, protein for human consumption and who knows what else inspired Americans will create with this gift that only consumes carbon dioxide as it grows. And, there is not one case of cancer associated with smoking cannabis, no violence like there is with alcohol. We are currently importing cannabis products from France to make the wood-grained finishes in some of our cars. The R party must embrace logical thinking, and propose laws that will restore the healthy Middle Class that was destroyed by outsourcing jobs and manufacturing. Our Country needs to be saved from Obama's attack NOW. Thank you again for your speech today, I wish you continued success.

Paul, Borrow and Spend is FAR worse than "tax and spend". Republicans took a balanced budget, instituted unfunded tax cuts, waged two unfunded wars, built up a $12trillion deficit, and now try to claim we should kill Medicare and Social Security because of the "financial crisis"; AND claiming the current President is to blame for all of it! First, repeal the UNFUNDED Bush tax cuts and BRING THE BUDGET BACK INTO BALANCE. If you want to give a tax break to rich folks WHEN THEY ACTUALLY CREATE A JOB, AFTER IT HAS BEEN A JOB FOR A YEAR OR MORE, FINE - but no more "faith based" "all rich people create jobs with their [VAST] tax breaks - IT JUST IS NOT TRUE. Once the budget is back in balance, re-establish "Pay-Go", as agreed before Bush and the Republican majority reneged on their promises and votes to balance the budget. Then the "financial crisis" will be solved. You cannot expect Georgians to keep voting against their best interests, especially when you are seeking to eliminate the only retirement and retirement healthcare 3/4 of them have since the Bush Administration allowed so many corporations and Wall Street to steal the pensions of millions of Americans. You cannot expect Georgians to keep swallowing your outrageous falsehoods, doubletalk, and irrational viewpoints. You replaced a fine representative who always put Georgia, and Georgians - NOT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DOGMA OF THE DAY - first. So far, you have not shown yourself to be even close to worthy to fill Charlie Norwoods seat, and you definitely don't appreciate what it means to be a real, sensible, Conservative. END BORROW AND SPEND - SUNSET THE BUSH TAX GIVEAWAYS - BRING THE BUDGET BACK INTO BALANCE. Killing Medicare and Social Security WILL NOT FLY, PERIOD.

Good to see that the wool has not been pulled over all the eyes in GA. If Dr Broun is serious about reducing the debt why isn't he trying to end these useless wars and downsize the military?

Every time someone says cut the military it makes me cringe. You see, retiree benefits are tied to the military budget. After 40+ years of service I have taken several cuts in pay and benefits in recent years because of the "cut the military" montra. The time has come to separate the RETIREE pay and benefits from the Pentagon Budget. I have also PAYED into Social Security for 50 years. Let's do three things: 1. NO Social Security to NON Citizens! Period!! 2. Cut Social Security Education benefits. 3. Put the lock back on the box!!! Last bite! SELL excess Federal Land!!! The Government owns thousands of parcels of land in every state for no known purpose. The Government owns millions of acres of land in excess of that necassary to manage projects. SELL excess land, put it back on the tax rolls!! NO new unwanted Corp of Engineers Projects.

Dear Dr. Broun, Many retired soldiers like myself face an unfortunately unfair situation which at this time can only be helped by a congressional involvement, because a current law prevents us from transferring our Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit to our dependents. My particular case is that I retired after 20 years of service in the US Army in march of 2007. By law I can not transfer my benefit to my daughter, who by the way is trying to become a medical lab technician. I would have had to retired in 2009 to be able to transfer my benefit. Here's what the Army told me recently, and why I am contacting you: " Unfortunately you are not eligible for benefits because you were not in the service on or after 1 Aug 2009 (when the program was implemented) and because you have to complete the transfer before leaving military service. These are both requirements established in law The Department of Defense and Army policy require a Soldier to be on active duty or a member of the Selected Reserves in order to transfer benefits. These policies are based on requirements established in law; section 3319(b) of Public Law 110-252 requires that one be a member of the Armed Forces. Consequently, the Army does not have the legal authority to grant an exception to policy allowing those who retired or were otherwise separated to transfer Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. The only way you will become eligible to transfer is if the law is changed and made retroactive. I apologize, but our office is restricted by the law. Respectfully, Army G-1 Post 9-11 GI Bill Team " As my congressman to whom I proudly voted, and will certainly do again, and also as my fellow veteran, I am hoping that you will take this matter into consideration and somehow provide me/us a feedback as to what your thoughts, ideas, and plans of actions are relating to this matter. highest regards, SGT (RET) Farrokh Mirbaha U.S. ASRMY

The FDA is running roughshod over small farmers and food/supplement manufacturers. Big business can create all the foul, dangerous drugs and foods it desires, but the FDA goes wacko over an Amish farmer selling raw milk. We would be better off without an FDA because there isn't any regulation of large predatory firms, only small mom and pop outfits. We are worse off than we were in 1900. I don't want to have to buy burdock root from Pfizer Pharmaceutical. I don't want to have to get a prescription for 1000 mg vitamin C. It's my body, and I'm fully grown. Right now the FDA is trying to call unlicensed new ingredients in food supplements adulterants. The supplement maker will have to submit the new ingredient under a new expensive license process under the FDA. The new regulation is going through the public comment process. We need a law to keep FDA from making a new stupid law. I thought this sort of thing was the territory of Congress. I hate the FDA.

It is time you people in Congress started working for the middle and lower class citizens who, with their back breaking jobs are keeping this country going. Social Security is not something the government is giving us, it is what we worked for and paid into with our own hard earned money. Just because the elderly no longer are able to work and pay taxes etc.. you want them to fade away since they are no longer productive members of society. Fair tax, where everyone pays the same percentage is what we need to do!!! The companies that take their business overseas should have to pay an extremely high import tax so that the small wages paid overseas where our jobs went to, will make Big Business think again before they move to a 3rd world country. What we need to do is have a REVOLUTION and get rid of all you self centered politicians who are still out just to line their own pockets.

Hope you can learn to compromise for the good of The People instead of your political gain. You represent ALL the people in your district -old, young, rich, & poor - please reach beyond your short sighted agenda to consider ALL The People in your actions & voting.

It is difficult for me to find any way to condone or justify you not attending our President's speech. It is very easy, and may I suggest childish, to sit on your own turf and post unproductive comments to the internet while continuing to do nothing. By continuing to not participate in solving our nations problems you show me that you are truly out of touch with what America wants most right now - a productive congress working for us not you. Please reconsider your decision to not attend our highest elected official's speech and begin playing a role in solving our nation's serious problems. Show some respect and do the job you were sent to do!

Why do you think the disapproval rating for Congress is 89% could it be that individuals place self before Country, Duty and Service to the American people let alone your constituents? Try doing your job before thinking of yourself as a martyr or savior it's getting old and quit acting like a 5 year old. How will you know what or how the Presidents speech will affect your Country, send an aide then have them read their notes to you while you lay in bed. Some day you might have to grow up and act like a real man, get some or grow some and attend the Presidential Speech who knows it could be your last.

Political grandstanding? You're obviously out of touch with the needs of everyday Americans. I'm from Michigan and have been out of work for TWO YEARS. I do NOT get unemployment, I do NOT get food stamps. And there is no hope in sight with you Republicans continuing to be the "The Party of No". Stop your political grandstanding and get us back to work. The most recent proposal by Obama might not be perfect, but its far better than ANYTHING that you Republicans have presented. I have two economics professors in my family, a lawyer, a teacher, a doctor and an extremely successful real estate agent. And through thorough research and discussion we've all determined the greatest obstacle to American prosperity is this illogical fascination with saying No to EVERYTHING Obama proposes. Stop being a corporate puppet that panders and lies to the public just to get re-elected.

People in your district are suffering and I think what is best for the people in your district should be your primary concern. Jobs are needed in this district as our unemployment rate is higher than the national average. Georgia also has one of the highest poverty rates in this country and what is best for the people in this district should be the only agenda that you have. At this time, it should be critical to support our president and try to improve the slipping situation of our middle class. Disrespecting our President does not accomplish anything other than making our member of congress look like a yahoo to the American people. We elected this president so we should support him as he does what is best for our entire country.

I agree that the role of the federalist government that we have created must end. We must not just blame the present administration or the Democratic party, but all of us for allowing this to come to pass. The present path that we are going is exactly what happened to start the bloody civil war. That war was not over slavery, but states rights verses the federal oppression. Keep up the fight for small efficient government.
