Biography

Congressman Rick Berg brings more than twenty-five years of committed public service and private business experience to Washington, D.C. as he serves as North Dakota’s sole member in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Born and raised in North Dakota, Rep. Berg was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1984.  While in the Legislature, he served as both Majority Leader and Speaker of the House, and spearheaded initiatives that reduced taxes and helped develop North Dakota’s agricultural and natural resources.  While Rep. Berg served as Majority Leader, North Dakota experienced dramatic economic growth, resulting in numerous new businesses and tens of thousands of new jobs in North Dakota.

Rep. Berg is also a well-respected business leader in North Dakota.  His legislative work has allowed him to work closely with many of North Dakota’s business leaders, and in December 2009, Rep. Berg was awarded the Greater North Dakotan Award, the highest honor given by the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce, for working to strengthen North Dakota’s business climate.  He was also awarded the Petroleum Council’s Legislator of the Year award in August 2009 for his work with North Dakota’s growing oil industry.

Born in Maddock, North Dakota and raised in Hettinger, Rep. Berg grew up hauling bales and working with cattle and was active in 4-H and FFA.  He earned a wrestling scholarship to North Dakota State School of Sciences, and later transferred to North Dakota State University, where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture Economics.

Rep. Berg and his wife Tracy, a physician practicing family medicine in Fargo, have one son, Jack.  They are actively involved in their community, and support a number of organizations, including the American Red Cross, YWCA, Fargo’s Hope Lutheran Church and NDSU’s Farm House Fraternity.  Rep. Berg also serves on the board of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation Board of Directors.
