With more than 75,000 veterans and over 25,000 active men and women serving in our Armed Forces, Alaska is proud of our military and proud of our reputation as a military friendly environment.

Our state's history is closely intertwined with the sacrifices and contributions of our military. From that service, Alaska has benefited immeasurably and we can never lose sight of what we owe our veterans - past, present and future. Tens of thousands of Alaska residents found their way here as result of service to our country. To these veterans and veterans across this great nation we must ensure that we never waiver from our commitments to the men and women who have stood up for America.

Understanding the Unique Challenges Facing Alaska’s Veterans

Senator Begich recognizes that rural Alaskans have many unique challenges in accessing health care. The geographic separation and sparse populations in many areas of the state pose a significant challenge not seen in other states around the nation. That is why Senator Begich will continue to lend support to legislation such as Senate 252, the Veterans Healthcare Authorization Act of 2009, and Senate 658, Rural Veteran Healthcare Improvement Act of 2009. These bills seek to address many of the issues faced by our rural veterans. Senator Begich will continue pushing for innovative solutions such as providing telehealth services to remote communities. Telehealth services will eliminate the need for travel to major hubs like Fairbanks or Anchorage for routine requirements by taking advantage of modern technology allowing veterans to interact with service providers via videoconferencing. Senator Begich consistently searches for new and better solutions to the challenges facing rural Alaskans.

Addressing the Imperatives for Alaska’s Veterans

Senator Begich will continue to work on the Armed Services Committee and Veterans Affairs Committee to ensure quality health care and full funding for the VA. Senator Begich strongly believes that certain issues must be addressed to provide Alaska’s veterans with the service they have earned and deserve thanks to their service to our nation’s Armed Forces. Veteran homelessness, access to the finest healthcare, efficient and effective claims processing, transition from military to the civilian workforce, and continued education opportunities all represent issues that must be addressed right now. America has a contract with its veterans. We must take care of those who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.
