for our Troops and our Veterans

Tackling issues with our veterans – Sen. Mark Begich held a veterans town hall meeting over Veterans Day to discuss moving forward to protect and strengthen services for Alaska’s veterans.

As we look ahead to Thanksgiving this Thursday, we have so much to be grateful for this holiday season, particularly our active duty military men and women, and the millions of veterans in Alaska and across the nation. I spent the week of Veterans Day at home thanking our vets and military for their service to our country. After a long year in Afghanistan, Alaska Army National Guard’s B Company, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne) deplaned in Indianapolis just two weeks ago and are now on their way back home to over 30 communities across Alaska. I had the great privilege of traveling to Indiana to greet them when they arrived back in the United States.

Over the weekend, I also held a veterans town hall meeting in Anchorage to hear directly from Alaska’s veterans about benefits, job placement services, and other programs they rely on. I then headed to Fairbanks where I joined in a moment of silence to honor the thousands killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, which was followed up by a procession of antique cars driving veterans over the Veterans Memorial Bridge at its grand opening.

This month we also take time to honor Alaska’s first people during Native American Heritage Month. Alaska Native tribal governments, non-profits, health organizations, corporations, armed service men and women, artists, teachers and cultural bearers, continue to make significant contributions to the fabric of Alaskan society.

As we spend time with our families and reflect on the things we are grateful for, I want to send a special thank you to our active duty military men and women and our veterans for all they have done and continue to do to serve our country.

Sincerely,

Begich Introduces Legislation Creating Incentives for In-state Natural Gas Delivery System

In response to skyrocketing energy prices in Interior and rural Alaska, Sen. Mark Begich announced legislation to apply one-stop permitting benefits, by applying Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline Act of 2004 provisions to any natural-gas transportation mechanism – be it an in-state pipeline, trucking natural gas to a community distribution network, or any combination of transportation systems to get Alaska’s North Slope natural gas to Alaska or foreign consumers. “High energy prices and potential energy shortages threaten our state’s economic stability. We have to start proposing solutions in an effort to bring costs down.” Begich announced the bill over Veterans Day weekend in Fairbanks.

Begich Proposes Changes to Strengthen Social Security

Declaring that the federal budget should not be balanced on the backs of America’s seniors, Sen. Mark Begich announced a new bill to strengthen the Social Security by extending the solvency of Social Security for approximately 75 years by requiring higher-income Americans to pay Social Security on their earnings all year long. The bill also adjusts the formula for cost-of-living increases to better reflect the needs of our seniors and persons with disabilities. "Our seniors and persons with disabilities need the security of knowing the benefits they earned during decades in the workforce will be there for them when they need them most,” Begich said. Begich discussed the bill at a senior town hall meeting at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center last Tuesday. Sen. Begich points out that Social Security has not contributed a dollar to the deficit and should not be considered under cuts to address the federal deficit.

Begich Designates November 24 as “Small Business Saturday”

Sen. Mark Begich co-sponsored a resolution designating November 24, 2012 as “Small Business Saturday,” which passed the Senate with unanimous consent this past September. Small businesses represent 99.7 percent of U.S. employer firms and employ ½ the employees in the private sector. As a small business owner, Sen. Begich believes we can do more to increase the awareness of the value and importance of local small businesses. In the wake of Black Friday, the most popular shopping holiday of the year, he hopes Alaskans will take the following Saturday as an opportunity to shop locally.
