Dreier Votes to Improve Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) voted today to help fire departments and emergency response organizations access the resources necessary to safely and effectively respond to emergencies.  H.R. 3791, the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act of 2009, was approved with strong bipartisan support,  395-31.

“The residents of the Foothills needn’t look any further than the charred mountainside to be reminded of the dangers faced by our brave firefighters and first responders.”  Dreier said in a statement on the House floor.  “The recent Station Fire burned more than 160,000 acres and took the lives of two dedicated firefighters, Fire Captain Ted Hall and Fire Fighter Specialist Arnie Quinones.  This bill will help to ensure that our firefighters have the tools and support they need to protect our communities and safely respond to emergencies.”

H.R. 3791 reauthorizes the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency Response (SAFER) programs within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through 2014.  The AFG program, which is authorized at $1 billion annually, provides grants to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations for equipment and support for fire prevention and safety programs.  $1.2 billion annually is authorized for the SAFER program, which awards grants to fire departments to increase levels of trained staff.
