Dreier on GOP’s Pledge to America

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rules Committee Ranking Republican David Dreier (R-CA) praised the release today of A Pledge to America, House Republicans’ pledge to revive our floundering economy, get our fiscal house in order, and reform the way Congress conducts the people’s business.  Dreier said the Pledge represents a series of proposals that can be implemented immediately in order to spur job creation and restore the faith of the American people in their government.

“Our top priority is job creation and deficit reduction,” Dreier said.  “The key to doing that is preventing massive tax increases on families and small businesses and getting government spending under control.  We also need to change the way Congress operates.  That means a change from the way both Republicans and Democrats have conducted the people’s business.  We need to restore real transparency and debate to the legislative process, particularly on spending bills.  We need to guarantee legislation is available for at least three days before it’s up for a vote.  We also need ensure the legislation we pass has its authority based in the Constitution.  Applying these simple standards will make Congress more effective and more responsive to the American people.”

The Pledge also seeks to address the need for real healthcare reform by vowing to repeal the job-killing healthcare law passed earlier this year with sensible reforms that empower small businesses and families with greater access to cost effective healthcare coverage.  These reforms include: enacting medical liability reform; allowing the purchase of health insurance across state lines; expanding health savings accounts; strengthening the doctor-patient relationship; and ensuring access for patients with pre-existing conditions.  Dreier said responsible healthcare reform is critical to lowering healthcare costs and helping over economy begin to recover.  Additionally, the Pledge addresses the need for a strong national defense at home and abroad by calling for clean troop funding bills, keeping terrorists out of America with a sound detention policy, and a responsible immigration policy that gets the border under control and working with state and local officials to enforce our nation’s immigrations laws.
