Dreier Supports Passage of Legislation to Improve Veterans’ Services

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) this week supported passage of a number of bills to improve the quality of life for our nation’s veterans and their families. H.R. 3219, the Veterans’ Insurance and Health Care Improvements Act; H.R. 1293, the Disabled Veterans Home Improvement and Structural Alteration Grant Increase Act; H.R. 2770, the Veterans Nonprofit Research and Education Corporations Enhancement Act; H.R. 3155, the Caregiver Assistance and Resource Enhancement Act; and, H.R. 1803, the Veterans Business Center Act were all approved by the House with overwhelming support.

“With passage of these important pieces of legislation, we are taking another step forward in fulfilling our commitment to ensure that veterans, who have already sacrificed so much, are provided the best care and services,” Dreier said.

H.R. 3219 allows veterans under the age of 60 to increase life insurance coverage through the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance program to a maximum amount of $400,000. It also raises the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare priority level for Medal of Honor recipients. Finally, H.R. 3219 prohibits the VA from collecting certain copayments from severely disabled veterans.

H.R. 1293 increases VA funding for disability-access improvements to the homes of wounded veterans. Under this bill, the VA can award a grant of up to $6,800, an increase from $4,100.

H.R. 2770 enhances the quality of medical research for veterans by increasing coordination among medical research centers to allow them to pool resources and increase accountability.

H.R. 3155 improves support services for caregivers who are assisting disabled or injured veterans. This program will provide a resource directory, counseling, mental health services and educational opportunities for caregivers.

H.R. 1803 establishes a Veterans Business Center within the Small Business Administration to provide counseling and training for veterans and surviving spouses who are looking to start or expand a business.
