Congressman Dreier Observes Memorial Day, Invites Veterans To Join Veterans History Project

SAN DIMAS, CA - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) participated in a number of local events observing Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th including the Montrose Memorial Day Program at the Vietnam War Memorial, the La Canada Flintridge Program and Parade, the San Marino Program at Lacy Park and the La Verne Memorial Day Program at the VFW Post. Congressman Dreier, while joining the communities in commemorations and delivering remarks to honor those who have fought and died in service to our country, invited veterans to participate in the Veterans History Project, an ongoing effort with the Library of Congress to gather and record for posterity personal stories of military experience.

"Our nation's veterans have fought and secured freedom for people around the globe," Dreier said. "They have been supported and sustained by family and friends here at home. Their story is America's story. Recognized as the original Greatest Generation, once 16 million strong, World War II veterans are passing at a rate of over 1,000 a day, leaving only about 2.5 million. We must record and learn from their experience while we can. Just as important are the lessons we can learn from the new Greatest Generation, our young men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. These veterans can provide a critical perspective on the challenges we face in combating terrorism in the 21st century."

Since 2004, Congressman Dreier's office has collected over 400 personal stories from veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans and family members of all generations are encouraged to contact Congressman Dreier's office at (909) 575-6226 to schedule an interview to give first-hand recollections of their military experiences, as well as any photographs, correspondence or memorabilia they would like to share. Remembrances will be preserved by the Library of Congress where they will be stored and accessed by future generations. Interviews will be held between Monday, July 6th through Friday, July 17th in the Congressman's San Dimas office.

Dreier continued, "I am proud to be hosting the Veterans History Project again this year and know that we, and generations of Americans still to come, will greatly benefit from the lives and stories of our nation's greatest treasure, our veterans."
