Dreier Supports Passage of Improvements to Healthcare Benefits for Veterans

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), voted for legislation today to strengthen and improve healthcare benefits for veterans and their caregivers. S. 1963, the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act, expands services for our veterans, including increasing healthcare options for those with severe injuries and for female veterans. In addition, this legislation supports the caregivers of disabled veterans and helps homeless veterans find housing. The legislation was approved with broad bipartisan support, 419-0.

“After the enormous sacrifice of so many of our men and women in uniform in defense of our nation, we must do all that we can to provide them with the best medical care possible,” Dreier said. “This bill will help strengthen the quality of care for veterans and will also provide much needed assistance for their caregivers, who are often family members of disabled veterans.”

Specifically, S. 1963 creates a new program offering counseling and training for the caregivers of eligible veterans. It also improves the healthcare options for women veterans, expands medical care to veterans living in rural areas and prohibits the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) from charging hospital or medical care copayments to catastrophically disabled veterans. Finally, S. 1963 expands reimbursement eligibility for veterans who receive emergency treatment in a non-VA facility and authorizes the VA to work with specialized care rehabilitation facilities to assist veterans with traumatic brain injury.
