Dreier Votes to Prohibit Use of “Slaughter Solution” for Healthcare Bill

Democratic Majority Votes to Keep All Options on the Table, Including Infamous “Slaughter Solution”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA) Rules Committee Ranking Republican voted today to prohibit the use of the “Slaughter Solution” when the House moves to consider healthcare legislation, possibly this weekend.  Dreier and his Republican colleagues were joined by 28 Democrats in voting to prevent the Democratic Majority from employing the “Slaughter Solution” to use the rule to hide a true up or down vote on the Senate-passed healthcare bill.  The process, sometimes known as “Deem and Enact” has been employed only six times since 1933 and never on a measure as controversial as this.

“Despite the unprecedented outcry, from even some of their own members, the Democratic Majority seems determined to use the Slaughter Solution to push their government takeover of our healthcare system over the objections of the American people,” Dreier said.  “Let me be clear, if they move forward with the Slaughter Solution, the only guaranteed outcome is that the Senate-passed healthcare bill, with all its special interest provisions, will become law.  There are no guarantees when it comes to reconciliation and the U.S. Senate.  It’s not too late for us to work together in bipartisan way to achieve real healthcare reform that will bring down costs and not break the bank, and to do it with the transparency and accountability that was promised.  Until the Democratic Majority abandons the Slaughter Solution once and for all, this process will be tainted in the eyes of the American people.”
