Dreier Supports Resolution Banning the “Slaughter Solution”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Dreier praised the introduction of a resolution that would ban the “Slaughter Solution” and require a transparent, up-or-down vote on legislation to overhaul our nation’s healthcare system.

The resolution would ensure that the Senate-passed healthcare bill, H.R. 3590, could not be sent to the President without a direct vote on the bill itself and at least one hour of debate in the House of Representatives.  Press reports have indicated that House Democratic Leadership is considering a procedural trick, the so-called “Slaughter Solution,” to avoid a vote on the bill and simply “deem” it passed by the House and send it to the President to be signed into law.

“The Slaughter Solution may sound like highly complicated and arcane parliamentary procedure,” said Dreier, “but its objective is very simple: an end-run around the democratic process.  The Senate-passed healthcare bill grows more unpopular every day, and the votes simply aren’t there to pass it.  Rather than starting over with a bipartisan, open, process, the Democratic Leadership is attempting to simply bypass a vote in the House of Representatives altogether.  This resolution would prevent them from doing so.”

Added Dreier, “The American people have never followed what goes on in Washington more closely.  They are demanding transparency and accountability for the actions of their elected Representatives.  This resolution would ensure that voters get what they are demanding and what they deserve – a fair, open, transparent vote that clearly puts each Member of Congress on record for the position he or she takes on the very critical issue of America’s healthcare system.”
