Dreier Leads Bipartisan California Congressional Delegation In Support of Federal Disaster Declaration for California

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas, CA), Leader of the California Republican Congressional Delegation, is leading a bipartisan effort to expedite Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s request for a federal disaster declaration due to the series of damaging storms that have caused floods, mudslides and debris flows in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, San Francisco, Siskiyou, Calaveras and Imperial Counties.

The storms, which began in California in mid-January, have damaged property, shut down major roadways, severed power lines and even caused the tragic loss of human life. Thousands of homes have been evacuated, nearly 680,000 households experienced power outages, and there has been major damage to private homes, businesses, and public facilities throughout the state. State and local emergency resources have been stretched beyond their capability and costs for this ongoing disaster continue to rise.

“With the damage to public services and private property, it is imperative that we do all we can to expedite federal assistance,” Dreier said. “That is why the quick action of the California Congressional Delegation is critical and I am proud of the continued bipartisan cooperation of our colleagues.”

California is already working with local governments, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and other federal agencies to deal with the extensive damage from this storm and to assist with the ongoing clean-up efforts. On January 21st and January 22nd, the Governor declared a State of Emergency for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Francisco, Siskiyou, Calaveras, Imperial, and San Bernardino counties for the storms that began on January 17th. Today’s bipartisan Delegation letter expresses support for Governor Schwarzenegger's request of February 11th for the federal disaster declaration.
