    • Reportedly House Speaker John Boehner has rejected a demand by President Barack Obama for powers to raise the debt limit, as part of talks on the fiscal cliff. This is foolish: the last thing we need is another pointless partisan struggle over the debt limit which everyone knows must be raised in the end.

We can't cut our way to prosperity given the challenges which face our country now and in the future. Extend the middle class tax cuts now and raise the tax rate on the wealthiest US citizens. Then you have leverage to protect Medicare and Social Security for the future. Right now it looks like the GOP is trying to create a permanent underclass to replace what used to be the middle class.

Rep. Tom, What do you think about eliminating the ceiling on collecting social security taxes on earned income, which is currently about $110,000? That would not be a new tax, but would raise enough additional funds to keep the Social Security System healthy for decades to come. How about getting rid of the capital gains rates all together and consider that as ordinary income like most people pay on their savings accounts? Cutting services for the elderly and needy will end up costing our country dearly as hospital emergency rooms are overtaking by the sick who can't food, shelter or medical care, which is at the bottom of their list. If you folks in Washington don't believe that you've made your personal wealth on the back of the poor and middle class, then maybe you should voter for a maximum age limit and be prepared to put the less fortunate out of their misery. You guys need to remember the golden rule....and it's not "those who have got the gold, make the rules.

  15. Had a great meeting with Ontario County Commissioner of Public Works Bill Wright this afternoon in Canandaigua - clear that we need to address our infrastructure crisis in America and we will! It is always helpful to hear new ideas for legislation - we have worked with Bill before on legislation including the BUILD Bridges Act and look forward to more collaboration in the future.
