REED ANNOUNCES THAT JAMIE PERRIN WINS 2012 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION;

Freshman Marcus Whitman Student’s Work to Hang in United States Capitol

Congressman Tom Reed today announced that Jamie Perrin, a freshman at Marcus Whitman High School in Rushville, is the winner of the 29th District 2012 Congressional Art Competition. Perrin’s work was judged the winner from a field of submissions from high school students throughout the 29th Congressional District.

“The Congressional Art Competition is an exceptional opportunity to showcase and recognize the exceptionally talented young people in our area,” Reed said.  “When you look at the art work submitted it is hard to believe that these are high school students and not accomplished adult artists.  I want to thank Jamie and all the artists for their first class submissions. ”

Jamie’s piece titled “Pieces of Me” features a detailed self-portrait using a collage technique.  Having been selected as the 2012 winner, “Pieces of Me” will be put on display in the United States Capitol in Washington, DC.  Additionally, Jamie and her mother will be flown to Washington, courtesy of Southwest Airlines, to visit with Congressman Reed and attend a special ceremony honoring art winners from each Congressional District in the United States.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition recognizing the artistic talent in each Congressional District. A panel of judges from Nazareth College selected this year’s winner.  The panel included President Daan Braveman, Professor Ron Netsky, Professor Mitch Messina and student art majors Zullette Hernandez and Paolo Marino.

Additionally, five other student winners were selected to have their artwork displayed in Congressman Reed’s Washington D.C. office:

  • Antonio McLauri, Horseheads High School - “ Waiting for Inspiration”
  • Olivia Vesnesk, Elmira Southside High School - “So Converse”
  • Stephanie Ann Creeley, Corning Painted Post West High School -“Knifed Apples on Raw Canvas”
  • Maureen Flanagan, Pittsford Sutherland High School -“Balloons”
  • Brooke Dunham, Wellsville High School -“The Collection”

“I relish any opportunity to encourage our area’s youth and to promote their diverse interests and talents,” added Reed.   “I am grateful for the support and hard work of President Braveman and his team at Nazareth College for their commitment to the arts and their generosity of time in judging this year’s competition.”
