Deadline Near for Students Interested in U.S. Service Academies

Oct 5, 2012

Sixth District high school seniors interested in attending a U.S. service academy next year should contact Rep. Tom Petri immediately at 1-800-242-4883.

Petri nominates a limited number of students to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.  He also assists students seeking to attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT.

The deadline for those interested in being nominated by Petri for appointment to an academy is October 15.

To qualify for an appointment, a student must be a U.S. citizen, single, at least 17 but not yet 23 as of the date classes begin, and a resident of the 6th Congressional District.

The students to be nominated are chosen by Petri's nonpartisan Commission on Congressional Appointments.  Its members are distinguished residents of the 6th District who evaluate all applications submitted to the congressman's office.

Final selections are based on the applicants' high school records, ACT or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, essay responses, interviews, and medical status.  Nominees will be announced in December.
