    About
  1. The Governor and Republican legislature may have made the radical right special interests happy today, but this stain on Michigan's proud heritage will not be allowed to stand. Michigan played a key role in giving workers a meaningful voice in the workplace, helping to create a strong middle class and setting the stage for effective labor-management relations in industry and beyond.

The effort to reverse this wrong-headed action and restore a Michigan that encourages middle class jobs and race to the top for its workers – not a crash to the bottom – begins today.

    •  Today Rep Sandy Levin and Congressman Jim McDermott introduced a bill that would modernize, streamline, and strengthen U.S. Customs and Border Patrol trade functions. H.R. 6656 includes stronger enforcement measures, requires the collection of additional security where there is reason to believe an importer is evading U.S. trade remedy laws, and seeks increased funding for U.S. Trade Representative including additional resources to strengthen the enforcement of U.S. trade agreements.

    • I'm with Dave Call glad we have RTW. The closed shop is out dated. It forced conservative union members to contribute to democrats against there wishes. To be fair a just, the unions should have invited all members to vote to wich party would receive their "donation". John Nagle

    • Mr. Levin I'm so glad we have a right to work law now. I have watched the Democrats over the past 50 years run southeast Michigan into the ground and the unions are a major part of that. I would think the unions would relish the chance to prove how good they really are for there members, Well this is there chance. If unions are so good for the people of this state they should have no problem building there numbers. Also I always thought the majority ruled not the minority ( 18% of the work force in unions ). And another thing this right to work law will bring back some of the 90 or so company's that have left Michigan the past few years. Anyway as I said before if the unions are so good what are they afraid of?

  3. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which was first approved by Congress in1994, created a national framework for preventing domestic violence, assisting victims, and bringing perpetrators to justice. Its passage and subsequent reauthor...
izations have always been bipartisan actions, insulated from politics. Unfortunately, that’s not the case this year. Even though the Senate has passed a bipartisan, inclusive VAWA reauthorization, the Republican Leaders of the House of Representatives refuse to take it up.

Victims of sexual assault and domestic violence should not be subject to this kind of political gamesmanship. On December 11, I joined 119 other lawmakers in co-signing a letter to the House Leadership urging a Floor vote on the Violence Against Women Act bill before the end of the year.

  4. Today on the House Floor, Democrats are urging House Republicans to allow the House to vote on extending tax cuts for middle class families and small businesses. Click “like” if you believe Republicans should do the right thing and protect the middle class while fiscal cliff negotiations continue.
  5. On the PBS NewsHour at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss why Gov. Snyder decision to push so-called right-to-work legislation is so wrong for Michigan. It's bad for the state economy and bad for the middle class that collective bargaining rights helped to create.
  6. Joined my fellow members of MI congressional delegation today to urge Gov. Snyder to reverse course on so-called right to work legislation. If he moves forward he will plunge our state into deep division and controversy and turn back clock on laws that helped build the middle class.

  7. In Michigan, people with Medicare have saved $133.9 million because of the assistance the health care law provides with the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap known as the “donut hole.” In the first 10 months of 2012 alone, 82,885 ind...
ividuals in Michigan have saved an average of $721 on prescription drugs. During the same period, about 888,872 people with original Medicare in Michigan received one or more preventive services at no cost to them, with 125,258 having received an Annual Wellness Visit.

  8. Today’s report provides fresh evidence of a continuing recovery and adds urgency for Republicans to end their intransigence over tax rates and come to the table to resolve the end of year issues. We can come together and extend tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans, strengthen our economy and move forward on balanced deficit reduction. The only thing standing in the way of providing certainty to citizens and businesses is that Republicans in Congress continue to place their pledge to Grover Norquist above their responsibility to the American people.
  9. A dark day in Michigan as Republicans undo in one day worker rights that were approved in 1965 on a nearly unanimous vote and signed into law by Gov. George Romney. They should be ashamed to stomp all over this history and of their partisan, anti-union power grab that only serves to divide our state.
  10. I'm deeply troubled by the state House approval of the right-to-work bill today. If the Republican leadership continues this plunge into deep divisiveness, it will lead increasingly to Michigan divided, not Michigan united. They must turn back.

  13. Honored today to receive the support of my colleagues to remain as Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Committee.

The 113th Congress promises to be vital to the future of so many issues within the Committee’s jurisdiction. We must reform our tax code so that it is fairer, simpler and promotes job growth; protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare; maintain federal unemployment insurance for Americans who continue to look for work; and promote increased trade in ways that spread its benefits more broadly. Throughout, we must help ensure continued job growth as we rebuild our economy.

o take effect in January. I support addressing these end of the year issues and setting the stage for further deficit reduction and tax reform in 2013. One especially dire impact of the fiscal cliff is the federally-funded unemployment benefits will completely stop on December 29th unless Congress acts. We would experience a “human cliff” where on Day 1, two million-plus people would lose their unemployment benefits entirely. Read more on the impact the loss of unemployment benefits would have on American families.

  20. The House is voting on the ground rules for tomorrow’s debate on legislation to issue up to 55,000 STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) visas to immigrant students who earn advanced degrees at U.S. universities. Despite the fact that the House has done little more this week than debate bills to name 8 federal buildings, House Republicans are ramming through a closed procedure that denies any opportunity for Members to offer amendments.
