Working with your lender

Distressed homeowners are encouraged to contact their lenders and loan servicers directly to inquire about foreclosure prevention options that are available.

Approved Housing Counseling Agencies

If you are experiencing difficulty communicating with your mortgage lender or servicer about your need for mortgage relief, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved Housing Counseling Agencies that can help contact lenders and servicers on your behalf. North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks

The North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks charters, licenses and regulates a variety of financial institutions within the State. If you need to file a complaint about a state chartered bank, you may do so here.

North Carolina Housing Finance Agency

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) runs the State Home Foreclosure Prevention Project, which provides assistance to homeowners who are struggling with their mortgage. North Carolina Legal Aid     

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)3 law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.

Through the Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention program provides legal representation in foreclosure actions to saves homes, preserve credit ratings and strive to make prohibitive the cost of conducting business for the unscrupulous brokers and lenders. The program also promotes community education to increase awareness of home finance best practices and the dangers of predatory lending.
