Rep. Markey's office offers valuable educational experiences to current college students and recent graduates interested in the federal government, public policy, the legislative process and the citizens of the 7th Congressional District of Massachusetts.

This fast-paced office is best served by mature, professional individuals who possess strong written and verbal skills, can take initiative, and work well with others. Interns are assigned to projects with the staff members according to issue interest or expertise, i.e. environment, telecommunications, social services, veterans, etc.

Internships are available in the Medford district office and the Washington, DC office.

The Washington D.C. Office:
 
Representative Ed Markey provides internships to college students who are hard-working individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in public service and government work.  Representative Markey is a 18-term Democrat from Malden, Massachusetts, who is Ranking Member of the Committee on Natural Resources.  He is a senior member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where he sits on the Subcommittees on Communications and Technology, Energy and Power, and Oversight and Investigations.

Qualifications:  Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students and should be responsible self-starters who possess strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills.

Commitment & Credit:  During the summer, full-time internships are available for a minimum period of eight weeks. The deadline for application is April 1.  Throughout the school year, internship opportunities are available on a full-time or part-time basis.  The deadline for fall is September 1; for spring, January 15.  School credit is possible for all internships if arranged through and approved by the respective university or college.

Job Description:  Interns assist the Member and staff in all areas of the office operation.  Responsibilities include: researching legislative initiatives and drafting replies to correspondence; attending hearings and briefings in specific legislative areas; and assisting with a variety of legislative or press projects. 

Interns are assigned to work with senior legislative assistants based on issue interests or expertise.  The office is seeking interns to work on a variety of issues, particularly the Environment, Energy, and Health Care, but we welcome interns of all issue interests who possess a strong public service commitment.  Prospective interns will find detailed information on current initiatives by visiting Representative Markey’s web site:  http://markey.house.gov/ and selecting the “Issues” tab.

The Medford District Office:

2011 Medford Office Intern

An internship in the Medford Office offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the federal government in a fast-paced office environment. Through correspondence with various federal agencies, interns have the opportunity to enrich their writing and communication skills while providing assistance to those in need. Interns attend meetings with staff members as well as other events in the 7th District.

Duties in the Medford Office: The interns in the Medford District Office have a wide array of duties and responsibilities. Responsibilities include assisting with constituent casework, monitoring legislation, researching issues and projects, clipping newspapers, answering phones, and responding to constituents. Casework includes assessing a constituent’s situation, such as a pending claim with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Veteran’s Administration, or the Social Security Administration, and advocating on their behalf to resolve the matter.

Requirements: The position requires a mature, professional individual who possesses strong written and verbal skills. Computer skills, enthusiasm, and a strong interest in the American political system are preferred. Internships are unpaid and last a minimum of 8 weeks.
