SEPTEMBER 29, 2011: CONGRESSMAN CHARLIE GONZALEZ HOSTS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH YOUTH FORUMS FOR SAN ANTONIO STUDENTS PDF Print E-mail

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – This week, San Antonio Congressman Charlie Gonzalez hosted two youth forums for San Antonio students in order to discuss Hispanic Heritage Month and the importance of a good education. On Tuesday, Congressman Gonzalez met with over 200 8th grade government students at Gus Garcia Middle School and on Wednesday, he hosted a forum at our Lady of the Lake University. Congressman Gonzalez issued the following statement regarding the Hispanic Heritage Youth Forums:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity to reflect on the struggles and accomplishments of many of America’s great leaders, entrepreneurs, activists, and artists. And in doing so, we are able to use their stories to encourage young students to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of educational excellence and personal growth.

“This week I was fortunate to gain insight into the amazing promise that the students of San Antonio hold for our community and our nation. Our students are committed to being the next generation of leaders, but it is up to our generation, to provide our schools with the necessary resources and investments to allow their success. Education is the key to our country’s future.

“We must do all we can to better ensure that all Latinos, like all Americans, have a meaningful opportunity to improve their lives and succeed in pursuing the American dream. Access to education is a great equalizer, and there is no better investment in the success of our people or the financial health of our nation. Now more than ever, we must make investments in education, not just for Latinos, but for all Americans. While not all Americans share a common heritage, we share a common dream, and therefore a common destiny.”
