Instructions

An individual can obtain a fully paid college education at any of five U.S. service academies. Appointments to the Coast Guard Academy are made on a nationwide competitive basis. Individuals can be considered for an appointment to one of the other four academies by first competing for a Congressional Nomination.

Nominations in my Congressional District are made on a competitive basis, stressing scholastic, athletic and leadership abilities. The basic eligibility requirements for a nomination include the following:

  • Must be 17-21 years of age as of July 1st of the year of admission
  • Be unmarried with no dependent children
  • Be a United States Citizen

Students must submit all the following information to my Atlanta Office by November 2.

  • Application for Congressional Nomination below
  • SAT or ACT test scores. The test must be taken in time for my office to receive the scores by the deadline of November 2 of the applicant’s senior year.
  • Official copy of high school transcript with a listing of class rank and grade point average, if available.
  • Three letters of recommendation: one which must come from the student’s high school counselor or principal, one from a teacher under whom he/she has studied, and one from any other adult who is not a relative.
  • A written essay, not to exceed 250 words, explaining why he/she wishes to attend an academy.  Essays will be judged on content, grammar, and clarity of expression.
  • A recent photograph
