Rep. John Lewis For Jobs Third Workshop Provides Free Tax Preparation and Tips

Feb 21, 2012

This week Rep. Lewis will host a third jobs workshop offering tax tips for individuals and the self-employed as well as free tax preparation assistance for those who need it. The tax preparers will be well versed on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) which offers a significant cash benefit to low-income earners who fit within certain IRS parameters. Often people who are eligible for the benefit are unaware of it. As a ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee Rep. Lewis has called hearings to discover what limits the IRS's outreach on EITC and what methods could be employed to insure that everyone who is eligible takes advantage of the benefit.

"Strategic tax preparation is often an overlooked, underutilized way to for individuals and small businesses to get a return on investments and cash expenditures they have already made or will need to make in the future," said Rep. John Lewis. "We all heard recently about the million dollar tax return GE was getting. Big corporations have departments of accountants focused on combing the tax code to find millions for them in returned income. The tax code can be used just as effectively by individuals and small businesses, but often they don't have the time or resources required to do that. That's where this workshop comes it. It provides an opportunity for individuals and small businesses to get powerful tax preparation tips that can help them recover funds, helps them review the tax code strategically, and it facilitates tax preparation for those on limited incomes who have more tax advantages than they may think." The workshop will take place on:

In December 2011, Rep. John Lewis began a series of workshops to assist 5th Congressional District constituents who are looking for work. The first in the series focused on informing citizens about the federal employment process, since the federal government is currently one of the top hiring forces in the country. The workshop second workshop exposed residents of metro Atlanta to hiring managers at government agencies to discuss the federal government hiring process and the best ways to use the federal government jobs website JobsUSA. A schedule of upcoming jobs workshops will be posted on the congressman's website www.house.gov/johnlewis.
