Landry’s Pressure Pays Off: Burdensome Regulation on Louisiana Shrimpers Removed

WASHINGTON, DC – Amid pressure from Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced their withdrawal of a proposed rule requiring additional Turtle Excluder Devices (TED’s) on Louisiana shrimping vessels.

“I'm glad NOAA has heeded my warning and withdrawn their unnecessary regulation on our shrimpers. TED’s on skimmer and butterfly type fishing nets would have severely burdened our working families,” said Landry. “Louisiana fishermen are some of the hardest-working people in the country, and I am proud to do all I can to support them.”

In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Landry's Amendment prohibiting funds from being used implement NOAA’s proposed TED’s requirement: http://landry.house.gov/press-release/louisiana-shrimpers-win-house-vote. In October, Landry continued his pressure requesting exemptions from TED’s requirements due to damage from Hurricane Isaac: http://landry.house.gov/sites/landry.house.gov/files/documents/LandryNOAALetter100112.pdf.

Louisiana shrimpers are grateful for Landry’s efforts. “Those of us who have struggled through disasters like hurricanes and the oil spill are extremely grateful to have Congressman Landry fighting for us,” said Clint Guidry, President of the Louisiana Shrimp Association. “Congressman Landry’s pressure on NOAA has paid off for thousands of Gulf fishermen. I thank Congressman Landry for winning once again for Louisiana.”
