The Department of Homeland Security recently awarded the city of Superior Fire Department a $945,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant through its Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program.  This initiative is designed to strengthen a city’s ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards, and improve the overall level of preparedness.  The Assistance to Firefighters Grant supports the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters, in an effort to increase the number of frontline firefighters, rehire experienced firefighters, and create a more favorable working environment for volunteer firefighters.
