U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke: Focus fiscal reforms on improving U.S. manufacturing

There’s an old saying: “One should never let a crisis go to waste.” While an urgent fiscal crisis in Washington is threatening economic recovery, it also presents a rare opportunity for desperately needed bipartisan reform to boost U.S. competitiveness in manufacturing. I’m calling on Congress to seize this opportunity immediately after the election, regardless of which candidate wins.

Forgive Us Our Student Loan Debts?

The bill aims "to increase purchasing power, strengthen economic recovery, and restore fairness in financing higher education in the United States through student loan forgiveness, caps on interest rates on federal student loans, and refinancing opportunities for private borrowers, and for other purposes." Clarke argues that higher education should be seen as a public good, but the resulting student loan debt borne by many graduates negatively affects the nation's economy.

"Look, I'm from the streets," he said. "I'm born and raised in Detroit. I'm from a tough neighborhood. I saw a man murdered in front of me when I was 9 years old. The next year I saw my businesses looted and burnt down to the ground when Detroit rebelled." Clarke said what he learned from everything he's experienced is that young people need to value education, and that can keep them off the streets.

Five proposals to solve $1 trillion college loan crisis

Rep. Hansen Clarke, D-Mich., has introduced the Student Loan Forgiveness Act, which would forgive federal student loans after 10 years of income-based repayments. Borrowers who work in public-service jobs would be eligible in five years.

Rep. Hansen Clarke, a Michigan Democrat, introduced a bill that would forgive up to $45,000 in student debt after a borrower makes 10 years of income-based payments (no more than 10 percent of income). A petition in support of Clarke’s bill has more than 900,000 signatures.
