Congresswoman Susan Davis Votes in Opposition of Special Interest Riders to Tax Cut Bill

WASHINGTON – Today the House voted on the Majority’s plan to extend payroll tax cuts.  Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) voted against the measure because it contained special interest riders and would also cut the length of available unemployment benefits.

“In an attempt to protect millions of middle class workers from a payroll tax hike, this bill ends up hurting many other Americans, especially seniors and the unemployed,” said Davis.  “There are unnecessary provisions included that would weaken environmental and public health law.  It also attempts to expedite one infrastructure project yet ignores America’s other infrastructure needs.”

The one infrastructure project in question is known as the Keystone Pipeline extension. However, the bill does not address the other critical infrastructure needs in America, such as schools, roads, and bridges.

According to a report just released by the Associated General Contractors of America, San Diego County has seen a three percent loss in construction jobs dropping it to 226th out of 337 metro areas.

H.R. 3630 contains a risky anti-environmental rider to limit the ability of the EPA to regulate the emissions of mercury, cadmium, particulates and other toxic air pollutants.

The House passed H.R. 3630 on vote of 234-193. It is not expected to pass the Senate and President Obama has promised a veto.
