Congresswoman Susan Davis Votes to Protect a Woman’s Right to Choose
Washington – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) opposed an attempt by the House Majority to deny millions of women from purchasing reproductive health coverage with their own private funds.
“At a time when we should be talking about creating jobs, we’re instead debating a bill that would prevent women from receiving life-saving care,” said Davis. “The government has no right to interfere with decisions that should reside solely between the patient and the doctor.”
Current law already prohibits federal funds from being used to pay for abortions, except to save the life of the woman or in cases of rape or incest. Language in the new health care reform law makes clear that federal dollars are not to be used to pay for abortions. An Executive Order issued by President Obama reinforces that language.
This bill allows hospitals to deny abortion procedures even when the woman's life is in danger. As a result, it would leave millions of women without the life-saving care they may need putting their lives and health at risk.
