Rep Susan Davis Statement on New Cost Savings Report for Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal

Washington DC – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) released the following statement on the taxpayers’ money spent to enforce the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, as released today in a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).  Davis requested the GAO report.

“The GAO report released today only further solidifies my belief in the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.  Clearly this was the right thing to do.  No longer will American taxpayers continue to pay to throw out patriotic servicemembers who want only to serve their country.”

According to the GAO report, between Fiscal Years 2004 and 2009, the cost to separate and replace the 3,664 servicemembers discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell amounted to $193.3 million.  Of this total amount, $185.6 million was used to recruit and train replacements, while $7.7 million represents administrative costs.
