  1. I congratulate Senator John Kerry on his selection to be the next Secretary of State. The Senator has a long history of dedication to our nation – from his military service to his leadership in the Senate. His many years of work on the For...eign Relations Committee make him an outstanding choice to be our nation’s top diplomat.

I know that Senator Kerry will continue to represent our country with distinction and I look forward to working with him to continue to elevate the status of Africa within U.S. foreign policy.

I want to also extend my deep appreciation to Secretary of State Clinton for her extraordinary contributions to our nation. Her steady leadership has strengthened America’s position globally and re-established diplomacy as an essential component to U.S. global leadership.

  3. My Republican colleagues seem intent on continuing to play Russian roulette with the fiscal cliff deadline.

After wasting a day of critical negotiating time on a bill the President already said he would veto, Speaker Boehner at the 11th hour pulled his own legislation because he couldn’t even get enough support from his own caucus to have it pass the House. We are officially out of time to waste – the time is now to lead on this issue and work across the aisle to do what’s best for the American people this holiday season.
  4. I commend Ambassador Thomas Pickering for leading this effort to help the American people find answers for what went wrong on September 11th when our consulate was brutally attacked, killing four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens.... Today’s testimony gives us the opportunity to hit reset with regards to Benghazi and put politics aside. Now that we know how our security systems failed, we can put our focus where it should’ve always been which is finding answers for the American people, especially the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy. I applaud Secretary Clinton for accepting all of the board’s recommendations and look forward to doing what I can to improve the security situation for all of our diplomatic posts around the world, beginning with a call for adequate funding for securing and protecting embassies and their personnelSee More

  6. Spoke on the House floor to offer a special word of appreciation for my dear friend for his many years of service as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Thank you Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II for your service, your friendship and your leadership. I greatly look forward to working with you in the years to come.
  7. Today, I participated in the second of two hearing on the Democratic Republic of Congo in as many weeks. The DRC has been in crisis for near two decades and left 5 million dead and some 2 million raped, displaced or brutalized. Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee was actor and activist Ben Affleck who founded an organization that focuses on the ongoing crisis in the Eastern Congo.

  9. Today, President Obama announced the creation of an inter-agency task force to make concrete proposals for how we can curb gun violence in America. I commend the President for moving so quickly in realizing that now is the time for action o...n gun control. He’s also right in saying that he can’t do this alone. We all must share in the responsibility to keep our families safe. Here are some of my thoughts: http://karenbass.house.gov/blog/qa-gun-control

What are some ideas you’d like to see the task force put forward?

  13. I fully respect Ambassador Susan Rice’s decision to remove her name from consideration for Secretary of State. Her more than two decades of experience promoting peace and security in regions plagued by instability and crisis made her extraordinarily qualified to serve as America’s top diplomat. It is unfortunate she had to make this decision in the face of such unfounded and unfair character attacks. If judged fairly based solely on her qualifications for the job, she would've made an extraordinary Secretary of State.

  18. Many concerned constituents stopped by my office today to share their support for extending tax cuts for middle-class Americans and what $2,000 means for their families. I agreed -- we must preserve this tax cut for 98% of Americans. Last week, I signed a petition calling for an immediate vote in Congress on extending these cuts.

  24. Today marks the 19th annual World AIDS Day where again we come together to reflect and recommit ourselves to continuing the fight around the world to save future generations from this terrible disease. Read more: http://goo.gl/vcdM1

Secret...ary Clinton said it best this week when she unveiled the Obama Administration’s blueprint for an AIDS-free generation – we can in fact reach a point where virtually no child is born infected with HIV and those who do contract the disease have access to treatments that prevent them from developing AIDS as well as passing along the virus to others.

I offer my support to the millions of activist and survivors across the globe who are fighting to keep us headed in the right direction in the global fight against AIDS.
