Internships

Washington, DC

I offer internship opportunities in my Washington, D.C. office throughout the fall, spring, and summer semesters for college students.  These internships are an excellent opportunity to learn about the federal government and public policy issues while spending a summer or semester dedicated to public service.  Work hours during the fall and spring semesters are flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Summer interns are expected to work full time.

In Washington, interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

Summer is the most popular time for interns, and the rules of the House limit the number of interns an office may hire at any particular time.  Preference is given to residents of Guam.  The deadline for summer applications is March 1 of each year.

In my office, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may be assigned to assist in various constituent case work or work on District-based projects of importance.

University of Guam / Guam Community College

I also offer summer internship opportunities for third-year undergraduates at the University of Guam and Guam Community College.  UOG and GCC interns work in the Guam District Office but spend two weeks in Washington, D.C. to enhance their educational experience.  UOG and GCC interns are selected by our office, in consultation with the presidents of the institutions.

Students interested in an internship should send a letter of interest and resume to my intern coordinator.  Please contact my Washington, D.C. office for more information about Congressional internships.
