Thank you to the first responders from around the Portland Metro area who did a remarkable job after the tragic shooting at Clackamas Town Center yesterday. As we mourn the victims, we can take some comfort in our strong community spirit.

- My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of the senseless act of violence at Clackamas Town Center. We need more mental health care and fewer assault weapons.

Exciting announcement from Governor John Kitzhaber this morning about a possible expansion of Nike that could bring 2900 construction jobs and 12,000 permanent jobs by 2020. I’m looking forward to learning more about this proposal to bring thousand of good jobs to Oregon.- The exposure of Oregon National Guard troops to toxic chemicals during their service in Iraq was appalling and inexcusable. Today Senator Ron Wyden, Congressman Kurt Schrader, and I stood with some of these brave soldiers to show our support for them and for legislation to stop contractors from avoiding liability and making taxpayers foot the bill.

It was an honor to join Darlene Hooley and others to support the Hooley Scholarship Program for Oregon Veterans. These scholarships help veterans of the National Guard attend college after serving our state and country.Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici shared a link.
Investing in early childhood education is essential to future economic growth and reducing poverty. Congratulations to the State of Oregon on the award of a $20 million grant for early childhood education programs. The award, from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, will help Oregon continue its focus on early learning.Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici shared a link.
Thousands of military retirees in Oregon may lose access to primary care doctors, pay higher health care costs, and face long trips to the doctor. Our veterans deserve better. Congressman Greg Walden and I have introduced bipartisan legislation to ease the impact of the changes on military retirees and send a message that we honor veterans and their families.- Today I signed a petition calling for the Middle Class Tax Cut Act to be brought to the House floor for an up or down vote. Independent analyses show that automatic spending cuts combined with tax increases will likely undermine the economic recovery. We need to put aside differences and find a common sense compromise, which should include tax relief for most working families. What are your priorities for addressing the fiscal cliff?
- The Oregon Zoo is a leader in implementing high standards for the care and management of elephants in captivity. They recently welcomed a new baby elephant, and we can help name her! Vote for your favorite name at https://www.surveymonkey.com/

On World AIDS Day, we must renew our commitment to supporting research, education, and prevention to halt this deadly disease in the United States and around the world.- The Japanese government announced today that it will donate $5 million to the NOAA Marine Debris program to help cover costs for clean up and disposal of tsunami debris on the Pacific Coast. On behalf of the First District, I thank Japan fo...r this generous assistance. I will work with NOAA and state and local governments along the West Coast to ensure that this funding is used efficiently and effectively to mitigate environmental and safety impacts around the entire Pacific Rim.See More
- I'm glad to see Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum protecting consumers from debt settlement scams by using a bill I helped pass in the state legislature. Be wary of offers to settle your debts, and make sure the company is registered with the state.
- Homelessness among our veterans is a national tragedy, and we have a responsibility to make sure we care for those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. The Clothe a Homeless Hero Act, introduced by Rep. Kathy Hochul (NY), is a small but important step toward providing clothes to veterans in need. I’m glad this bill passed the House today.
